I was able to mount my CB inside the console and wired it to the ignition. I don't talk on it, but monitor what is going on in traffic. No problem hearing it, but I've found that the small Cobra resets to channel 9 on shutdown which means that I've got to open the conosle and reset it to 19 everytime. The antenna is a small windshield mount, mounted top center to the glass.

I run a CB and a VHF. I found the dash under the 4x4 switch was a good location but the plastic cracked after a few months.

I now use a small wire bathroom shelf that measures about 6" x 16". I drilled 2 hole on the front of the cup holders and bent the 2 wire ends down to go into the holes. The other end sits on the carpet. So the rig sits at a 45 degree angle with the radios attached to it. It works great especially on rough or off road as is gently "bounces" as it flexes and doesn't transmit the harsh jarring of a dash mount.

There is a photo of it at the end of my gallery.

I just finishing building a custom console to replace the tiny factory one. It goes right from the dash to the back of the seats. Once I get it installed it will house the radios out of sight but with external speakers on the side of the console. I use the truck for work and find it amazing that Ford didn't add an extra 3/4 inch to the width of the opening to fit a legal file folder. My custom one has room for that as well as closed space over the forward trans tunnel.

I have also considered putting a VHF in mine because I spend every weekend on the coast but heard it was illegal unless it was for work. also is there any interferance between the 2?

I live in British Columbia, Canada. Anyone can run VHF so long as you buy a licence from Industry Canada at $75 year. The frequencies in the radio must match the licence. I.C. are very accommodating in giving licences for common logging road frequencies. Legally, you need a letter from any company with a company frequency. But a lot of companies got tired of producing letters all the time and have included their common frequencies in group licences. In the Okanagan, an "Appendix 6" has 5 pages of common logging company and other frequencies. There may be something similar for 'the Coast'.

It is illegal to program your own radio. Only licenced radio techs are authorized. But if you do find out how..(the www has all the secrets) and you use your radio responsibly, you will not have a problem. After all, is it better to be able to program a logging company frequency into a radio and be safe or risk getting run over by 100,000 pounds of Spotted Owl Mobile Home.

Interference? Yes on transmit but it is seldom that you will be active on both radios at he same time. I just shut the other one off.

GeoQuest I checked out your gallery and you have some great pictures in there. Is your antenna mounted on a hood mount?

The VHF antanna is mounted with 3 screws on the inside of the left fender.

The CB is on the pushbar/winch mount where I can see it so as to stop it from being torn off by branches.

The rigid stock AM/FM antenna has been replaced with a spring mount to avoid damage by branches.

I had a magnetic mount for e CB but it got grit under it and started to corode through the paint. I've run a through the glass antenna for the cell but it keeps getting ripped off by branches so now I use a passive repeater at the back of the cargo area.

I've posted a pic of the antennas in my gallery.
