these are all car specs from an old ford engine specs sheet
some engines that are identical mechanically will be slightly different depending on what car they are in and tuning specs and exhaust system used.

just wanted to say i agree. wish i didn't get rid of my 75 F 150 4x4. now i'm paying 300+ payments for the truck i'm driving now. Just a quick question. what about the gas prices. the only time I drove my ford was on paydays.

The only time the Crew Cab comes out is for a cruise night, towing the trailer, and maybe showing off with some other old Ford trucks! Fuel range is about 200kms to the tank. So when it's towing time, fill the rear tank, fill the auxillary tank, and look for the next gas station!

I drive either my F-600 (today) or my 96 E-350 15-pass club wagon. both get around 10 mpg.(the van gets 14 on premium, so thats what it gets)

I'm used to paying $2.71 gallon here in california, so I do. I budget for it. still cheaper than a car payment and insurance on a small car.

Not bad at all. My Dad pulling his 580K Case backhoe behind his 460 F250 got horrible mileage.

Two choices...or three...or four really...

I have two choices...well, three actually.

My first choice is a Turbo 700R GM non-computer 4-speed OD. There's a company out here (California) that makes a "bad boy" conversion kit for Fords. $1,900.00 for the trannie and $600.00 for the conversion kit. +- $2,500.00 out the door.

My second choice is a Ford AOD "bad boy" from the same company, for the same price. Not as trick as the TH700R, but it doesn't need a conversion kit, so it's $600.00 cheaper.

Third is an over-drive unit that bolts on where the tail shaft normally goes. The same company makes it. It's in the middle of the price range of the TH700R and the AOD (+-$2,300.00) but it won't work as well, since C6 trannies slip. Over-drive is 20%, before the slip, as opposed to 30% OD with full lock-up for the TH700R and the AOD.

There's actually a fourth choice, but one that I won't consider because of the computer system, and that's an E40D. From what I understand, it's the ultimate for towing and off-road...but we're talking $4,000.00. Putting a computer into my 77' isn't something I want to mess with and since I don't tow the Space Shuttle or anything I think it'd be over-kill.

Jim

Carbureted applications require installation of a throttle position sensor to the carburetor throttle linkage, which should prove easier than adapting a TV cable for a Ford AOD or similar non-electronic transmission. All other sensor connections are integral to the transmission harness. Transmission harnesses can be provided in a turn-key manner, if so desired.

I've been batting around the 700r4 myself. I think its tci or someone makes an adapter plate for the tranny to bolt to the bbf. Plus they can be had used for a song. Then after talking over with a couple of tranny shops, pa, art carr, they recommended the aod, built of course.

I still have not decided yet, I like the idea of the controllable lockup on the 700, but the aod is sticking with a ford tranny. And I think I can still keep it as a lock-up tranny and still make it strong enough to live behind the 460 in a truck. That and I think my brother has an aod laying around somewhere at his house that can be rebuilt and used.

lokar makes a nice tv cable kit, and flexible dispstick too for the overdrive trannies.

i'm currently running a couple aod's in our trucks, and they work great.
the are a rather "soft" feeling tranny, but that makes them very nice to drive.

the aod uses a "lock-up" of sorts in 3rd and 4th. they actaully bypass the TQ, and have a direct drive shaft from the front drive plate of the tq, that goes to your 3rd, and 4th gears. these things will lug down to 800-900 rpm in either gear, and sometimes are a little slow kickin' down. TV cable is very sensitive, and a 1/16" adjustment can make them feel totally different. you can get these trannies from 84 and up crown vics, grand marquis, and town cars for a song. most have been driven easily, and have lots of life left.

Suspension lift...

A company down in Santee, California re-curves the forged I-beams that come stock on the trucks. They re-align them and then re-curve them for either a 3" or 5" lift on 2wds. The company is Autofab. They're located here... http://www.autofab.com/65-79.htm

Hope this helps.
