I have a 2002 SD with a 6.8 engine auto trans. The trans dip stick says Mercon on it. My question is can I put Mercon V in this trans and is it compatible with the Mercon? Also how can I tell what trans I have in this truck? Thanks Gene
Question....I have a 2005 Super Duty V10 4x4 Auto Trans and on the trans dip stick it says Mercon SP? Did they use the wrong dip stick on my truck?
I ordered the truck back in February 2005.
Thanks....Gage

Hi Gene,
Mercon V replaced Mercon a few years ago. Changes were made and they are completely compatible; and Ford doesn't license the production of Mercon anymore. So the only way to ensure that you're getting the proper fluid is to buy licensed Mercon V.

Nope, the dipstick is correct. DO NOT use Mercon V in your transmission. You need Mercon SP(Discontinued) or Mercon LV(Current production).
Mercon SP is not discontinued?? I bought a case of it from the dealer a few weeks ago...
When I had my trans flushed this past week my dealer also had to double check that I didnt need Mercon SP. The 05 front end always throws them off for about 15-20 minutes. The guy usually crawls under, then gets back out and looks around for a while trying to figure out why eveything is wrong.
