pcv valve

just wondering, do you need a pcv valve? I have a 390 with edelbrock performer rpm manifold. Right now all i have is k&n breathers but there seems to be quite a bit of smoke comming out i dont know if this is normal or not. Is it possible to do damage without a pcv valve? Thanks.

It's better to run one. Go to Napa and get a breather and PCV valve. Hook it up and leave the breather on the other side.

The PCV is used for emmissions purposes, as well as to prevent sludge buidlup. The fumes that come out of the motor are quite harmful to the enviroement, not that it matters. And yes the white smoke type stuff that comes out is normal.

Not to mention the smell it can create in the passenger compartment.

Not to high jack the thread but after reading this I went out and checked my breathers. I have the same thing. My question is this: If I leave the breathers on and they get clogged up with oil will it cause problems? Could it force the smoke or whatever to come out else where? I just found small amounts of oil shooting past the dipstick handle and squirting on the motor. Could this be related? The amount of oil and when it comes out is in relation to RPM's.

You're getting blowby. The proper way to set up a PCV system is to have two breathers, one on each valve cover. One is run to the air cleaner, and the other has the PCV valve plugged into it. Then, the PCV valve is run to the PCV port on the carb, usually around the base.

Engine vacuum pulls the PCV valve open, and the breather on the other valve cover creates a cross flow through the engine. The combusion gasses are burned, and sent out the exhaust.

Now that you know what you need, go convert it. It's not hard.

I run a 3310 carb and the vacuum port on the back runs the brake booster. The front lower port works the tranny vacuum line. Can I run the PCV off the other vacuum port or do I need to put a T-line off one of the other vacuum ports?

Doesn't the intake manifold have a port or ports to run the brake booster and tranny line?

I run the Performer RPM so I'm sure it does. I couldn't get the old Vacuum Tee off the back of the old intake so I just used plugs on the RPM and ran off the carb ports. I didn't have a PCV so I didn't worry about hooking the Tee fitting back up. It sounds dumb now that I think about it. Figures there is a reason Ford did it like that to start with.

Hook a PCV valve up to the PCV port on the carb if you want your engine to live. Remember, just because a PCV valve rattles does not mean it is good. They wear out fairly rapidly. Replace them annually or 12K miles.

Run down to Napa and get yourself a new vacuum tee.
