Jim, I recall two pre API oil designations, MM and MS. The first 'M' presumably standing for 'motor'. If I remember correctly, lawnmower engines and such recommended MS oil and I believe the 'S' stood for 'service'.
Until now I've been unsuccesful in trying to locate any info to support my 'recollections'. However I just now located a link to support my hazy recollection of MM Motor Oil.
Lets see if I can explain the API sequence with out getting lost.
Pre 1947, all oil were classified by their SAE J300 viscosity only.
In 1947 the catagories were:
Regular mineral oil
Premium mineral oil with oxidation inhibitors
Heavy duty mineral oil with oxidation inhibitors and detergents/dispersants
In 1952 the catalgories were
ML, MM, MS for gasoline engines
DG, DM, DS for diesel engines
The current classification of "S" for gas and "C" for diesel occurred in 1970.
And to think, I actually got it right.
Horsepuller, the classifications that you are talking about was like this:
ML- Motor oil Light
MM- Motor oil Moderate
MS- Motor oil Severe
