I hooked up a buddies 89 F150 4x4 with 302 and auto tranny to a computer. I got the codes 44 and 52. If anyone knows what these codes mean it would be a great help. Thanks
Thanks guys. I was checking it out because when driving down teh highway it starts to sputter and then when the tranny shifts down it runs normal again. It is wierd because we changed motors and it does the exact same thing with this engine. I have a feeling it has something to do with the tranny but what do you guys figure.
Two possibilities:
1) the TFI/Pickup coil (if you swapped from the old motor). This can exhibit intermittant failures. The truck is more sensitive to ignition quality when under load.
2) The fuel pump is weak, the filter is clogged, or the regulator is not working right. The engine may be running out of fuel in some operating regimes. Check your fuel pressure and rate of leak down.
The pickup coil is in the distributor and the tfi is mounted on the outside of the dist in earlier models and on the fender , i think, on the later models.
Cheers,
Popa Tim
There is nothing critical about those codes. Write the codes on a paper and save them for the record. Clear them, by pulling the battery for a few minutes, or better yet, remove the test jumper wire off the EEC test connector during the test. See if the codes return in a couple days. The best way to screw up your truck and spend too much money is by jumping on a code too fast.
Has the truck any other issues? or is it failing emissions by any chance?
If there are no major problems clear the codes and try again later.
In the meantime, it is best to look at the least expensive items, i.e. broken vacuum lines, especially around the smog pump air bypass valve or air divertors and their associated solenoids. Some really simple problems can make that truck run like doo doo.
