help me decipher the codes

I checked my engine and I got a couple of stored codes. The first was code 42 (system rich) and code 34 (EVP Voltage above closed limit). I knew I was running rich but I don't know why. Does this other code have anything to do with my rich condition? Any help is appreciated.

help me decipher the codes

The EVP (EGR Valve Position) is a sensor mounted on the EGR valve that tells the ECM (computer) what position your EGR valve is in. It sounds like you have an EGR valve that is stuck.

If you did not have a lit up check engine light, erase the codes and recheck after a couple of trips....those codes could've been there for a while.

help me decipher the codes

My check engine light did come on and I also reset the codes before I tried them. A symtom it has is that it tends to miss at low acceleration when it warms up. I can goose it and it is fine.

just had problems with my O2 sensor...the check engine light never came on but i was running rich...ran the codes and got code 41 (running lean)...system was compesating by running rich...anyways it turned out to be a melted wire on the O2 sensor grounding out...a little electric tape did the trick...when i was troubleshooting i was told it was a waiste of time to run the codes if the check engine light wasn't on...this was untrue in my case...

Newbie question here....

How does one check codes on an 88 F150? Do i need a scanner or can it be done by cycling the ignition key? And this would be OBD1 correct?

It is OBD, yes, and you can check the codes yourself. Go to http://fordfuelinjection.com and click on "Getting Codes" to find out how it is done.
