I'll make the prediction that you will have no problem getting the acetone to go into solution and stay there. I'll make another prediction that if you add some water and acetone, both will emulsify with the diesel.
That would be another good experiment. After the test to see if the acetone will mix or settle with the diesel, add water to the concoction, shake well and let stand.
Johnny8, I have no acetone right now so if you do this little experiment please post it for us and let us know your results.
so what do you think would be the result of that happening... and if adverse... how much water would it take to cause that... i still think the water filter is gonna catch it... water will not combine with diesel fuel... and i don't think it will combine with acetone either... so if it can't for a solution with either the fuel or the acetone, how can it get around the water filter..?
Acetone will mix with water, but like diesel fuel and gasoline it is less dense that water, so the tiny amount of acetone you put in the tank should never see the bottom of the tank...assuming it is miscible with the fuel. Even if it isn't, the fuel tank pick-up is designed so that it will draw any water through the system and into the seperator, so there should be very little (if any) water present in the tank.
I think it's an interesting idea, but I'll be up here on the fence until you pioneers have a few months of data. The link Quik posted, while containing some very interesting points, has too much rhetoric for me to see it as much more than some guy venting on big oil.
Oh, and when you mix actone with water most of it will mix and disappear but for whatever reason it does not all mix and there are what appear to be some little "acetone bubbles" floating near the top.
Press on with pride, keep good records, and keep posting.
Interesting thread.... I, like Cookie, will sit patiently waiting for all of the results of your testing to come in.
Cookie.. I think that the bubbles that you see are concentrations of contaminants contained either in the water, acetone or the vessel you are mixing it in that will not go into solution. JMO
an update on my mileage... 78 miles on this tank, and i'm reading around 7/8 full, (not down to 3/4 yet)... on my last several tanks... i would be between 1/2 and 3/4 on the guage...
The odometer just died on my old commuter Audi, so I can't give a report. My wife's Audi still works, I'll have to use that reading. The F-550 has a giant fuel supply (130 gallons) so I can't give a report for a while.

cookie88... interesting info... questions for you... does the acetone mix with water to form a solution.... if so.. could this solution pass through the water seperator filter... also... wouldn't the acetone have to settle to the bottom of the fuel tank to mix with any water in the tank... if this is true... wouldn't the acetone simply mix with the fuel in the tank first...? lots of questions... i'm not sure if any of them are relevent...
here it is people... 15.54 mpg on that tank... now, that doesn't seem like much... but remember... we're still on winter diesel here... also... the best i have done on the last 4 or 5 tanks is around 13.... usually i get 12 or so... 13 x 1.2 = 15.6... this is the 20% increase in mpg that the arcticle i read claimed you could get with diesel, i think i got somewhere around 22% increase and she seemed to run smoother with no smoke at all.... one other thing to know, my tires are 2 sizes larger than stock, and my speedo has not been reset.... i know that i got more than the 428 miles that was on my trip meter...so i think i actually got better than what i calculated. i wanted to compare that to what i was getting though so i was comparing apples to apples.. FYI, i have not gotten much over 300 miles on the meter on previous tanks of fuel... but i used 27 gallons on this run, and i normally use only 25 gallons...
just an update... i start the new job monday... the place is ten minutes up the road.. so... no more 100 miles a day....! i am going to run the next tank without acetone... to get a baseline reading... and then i'll try another one with... but it will take me awhile to burn a tank now, (thank GOD...!), so any new comparisons will be more around town driving... and will be awhile in getting the info to you guys... one other thing... i found a station locally that is selling diesel for $2.19...! haven't seen that in awhile..! sorry for such a long post... but lots of info for you guys to comment on...!
