Can anyone tell me the details on the S-code 390. I have an H-code 390 in my truck, and saw the rebuilt motor in the links on this site, and was wondering if the S-code would be a step up, or down.
From what I have read they are a prety descent intake. One thing to watch for with them is that sometime in the 60's, I believe they changed the port size on them to accomodate the later velocity port heads. You might want to ask about this intake on www.fordfe.com I think that Dave Shoe (one of the guys on there) knows all about these intakes. I read one time that they are dogs but I don't know if that statement really holds any water or not.
If you are talking about the "S" engine code in the Fairlanes, Torinos and Mustangs, then yes it is. The 390GT engine was a big step up from any stock truck engine. Rated at 325 (1968 only) to 335 hp @ 4800rpm and 427 lb/ft of torque at 3200 rpms. Other than the early HP engines in the early 60's this were the best 390s.
The "S" and "H" you are refering to are the engine codes on your VIN. It is an upgrade as you are going from a low compression truck motor to a better compression car engine. If you want to build it yourself, just drop in some car or 360 pistons and a better breathing cam in your "H" motor.
