Replacing Body Mount Bushings

Hi,

I noticed that some of the body mounts on my truck are looking a bit perished and distorted. I've seen a replacment kit on BroncoGraveyard and wondered how easy they are to replace. I know they are generally sandwiched between the chassis and the body with a nut and bolt but how easy are they to replace without removing the body first?

Thanks

Simon

the biggest pain is rusted bolts. remove the bolts on one side of the truck dont remove any on the other side. jack the side removed up enough to replace. install new bolts, nuts, and washers, tighten down. move to other side and do same. i use grade 8. this is the time to install a body lift if you have been thinking about doing so good luck and dont forget to wear safety glasses your eyes will thank you

Thanks for the info. If I were to install a body lift at the same time would I not have to extend wiring looms, steering columns, hoses etc. or is there enough play in them for say a 1-2" lift?

You only need to extend the automatic transmission clutch linkage and modify or remove the fan shroud

The bolts are the easy part! If you can get them loose, great, if not cut them off. The hard part is going to be seperating the two part body mount inserts. They are a mushroomed into one another, if your lucky, you can take a piece of pipe and hammer them apart. If you live in an area where they put salt on the roads rather than there food, well??? The new insert's. NOT BUSHINGS, are expensive and are sold seperatly from the bushings and each other (remember there are two per mount, upper and lower). With out my contact at Ford they would of cost me over $450 for all new one's! Check with your local dealer and find out what they cost. I don't know of any aftermarket manufacturers.

I agree with Alsair, the hard part is separating the metal bushing sleeves. The bottom or lower sleeve is threaded for the bolt, and can get stripped easily. IT may take a punch and very large hammer to knock out the lower sleeve from above. I used a bushing knocker/removal set, with the bolt threaded in from below to help protect the threads on the sleeve. I still had to re-tap a couple of them in order to re-use the originals. The ones most likely needing replacement will be the two up front, under the radiator core support. The bushings and sleeves are made together as one unit, and are often rusted out. The one next to the battery is usually the worst. I recommend poly urethane bushings if you plan to keep the rig for a few years or more. The rubber ones only seem to last only a few years and need replacing more often. Good luck!

I don't necessarily need nor want a body lift. Was just investigating options. I think for now I will leave the job alone as they are not 'that' bad. With it being a CA truck there is minimal rust on it anyhow so the bolts should not need a dragon wrench.
