Another ATF problem
The situation is someone gave my daughter 4-speed automatic 1992 Ranger. I have no real idea who has owned it in the past, but as we cleaned out the accumulated tools and junk, we found several empty plastic ATF bottles labled "Type F." !!!
The truck shudders when starting out in first, then goes fast. Reverse is very weak and slow.
So my first question is what has to be done if Type F fluid has been used in the tranny for who knows how long? Drain it? Flush It? Junk it? Any suggestions?
The '92 has the A4LD automatic tranny and Ford says to use Mercon-rated ATF in them. Many people will tell you to use at least a partial synthetic ATF and there are several such brands to choose from. IMO, it's worth having the old stuff flushed out and the tranny refilled with some fresh Mercon-rated fluid, either full synthetic or semi-synthetic. Castrol Mercon is actually a partial synthetic ATF, and I recommend it. Mobil1 ATF is a "full" synthetic and also very good stuff, and it's Mercon-rated, of course.
Keep in mind that "Mercon" and "Mercon V" are two different animals. You want Mercon.
Before going to the next stage of troubleshooting the tranny's problems I wanted to explore what damage I should expect to deal with because of the type F being used for so long. I'll just clean it out and see how it does with the Mercon in it.
Thanks again.
