I have an 85 302 fi,it will run for 5min then shut off and will not start again,if i try the next day it kicks right off,the truck set for about a year outsise. I have put almost everything new on it,the codes say egr,and coolant sensor but i fixed that it was a wire off,it was a new sensor! I'm at my wits end, when i first started running it here up and down my road a little cause it set so long it was ok,and the it just started acting up!!
Meanie,
I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I pulled my hair out for weeks. I found that my coil wire coming from the Duraspark box had a bare spot in it; and occasionally it would short out on something on the front of the block, then it would shut off. Nothing seemed out of whack - I could wiggle the wires and she would fire right up and run until something jolted the truck again. Try this, it can't hurt.
Yeah a buddy of mi9ne said that he jiggled the distributor once and it kept running, but we looked everywhere and couldn't find anything! Oh wel keep looking i guess!!
If your wires are old I would change them and all associated parts just to be sure. Then check your battery connections at both ends (on the battery and starter or ground on the block) and any other ground wires. There should be at least one other from the block to the firewall. If they are all good and clean(ed), then I might suspect the Control Module. The wires are cheap to check though. Good Luck..
Yeah i have had heard about the distributor thing ,i rebuilt the thing but knowin me,i messed it up! So thanks guys i'll give it a try and get another one!!
I had a car once which had a very similar problem. It would start cold and woyuld run until I shut it off. When I tried to start it hot, it would not start. Turned out to be a bad coil wire. You could not tell by looking at it but it had a burned place underneath the insulation.
