What is the best why to get the rust out of the upper bed seam? The one on the outside of the bed. The entire seam has light rust and one hole approx. 4" long. Thanks.
I would try a sandbalster. If you mask the painted areas well enough before blasting it, you wont hurt the finish. Another trick that works well is muriatic acid. You can apply this with a brush. It eats the heck out of rust! Drawback is you have to rinse and cover the metal immediately because the acid will let surface rust colored stuff pop up quick. Any other ideas out there??
I bought a Spray can of Naval Jelley at AutoZone and it stops the rust it can reach. Turn's it black, and in a few days it can be sanded, painted, etc etc...
I too like to use muratic acid to first attack the major rust. But the need and abilility to flush and dilute the stuff is a problem. To deal with the flash rust, I usually just let it dry out completely (not too long here in the desert) and then coat it with Extend; it comes in a spray can or little bottles that allow you to brush it on. Personally, I prefer the brush/pour on stuff as it seems to work better in converting the rust but you don't end up with a smooth finish to repaint over. It all depends on where and how hidden the rust is and what kind of refinish you are going to do.
Let me join in with Elkman by thanking you all, since I was eagerly awaiting the same info. I have seen too many "dun it m'self" jobs where this rust was ignored and eventually ate its way under and through an otherwise great paint job
