I got to thinkin bout the K&N air filter deal. Its really not going to help you for gas milage because its not the filter that restricts the airflow at cruising speed... its the throttle body. You only have it cracked open a little bit, the restriction in airflow is what lets you cruise rather than burying the needle. Id think the new filter would really only help at WOT or at least close to that. Other wise there is not a whole lot of air flow going through the filter for it to restrict.
Great way to increase Mileage, and it only takes a second:
Set your computer to display fuel mileage. See that E/M button on your computer? Hit that sucker one time, and one time only. Must be an instant economy button. Mine went from around 14 to almost 18, while running down the road.
That little trip computer has a direct link to your **** sitting in the drivers seat, and when you look at it the OMG! factor kicks in and you take your foot out of it!
I get 13 around town and 17-17.5 on highway. But I used to drive an 86' GMC 1/2 ton P/u with a well built 350 and a whopping holley 4bbl. I got 6 city and 9 highway! But boy would she pass anything but a gas station!!!
Big one is to keep your foot out of it, I picked up nearly a mile per gallon by just easing out of it accelerating onto the interstate! Kicking the 5.4 was too much fun and that banked merge from the onramp was too often too tempting. And hitting it 4 times a day.....
I have a 99 EB with 5.4L, 80K+ miles. Just got back from a 3700+ trip to CA from TX and back. Highway speed was 70 to 80 depending on state. I got 17.35 MPG with a couple hundred miles of city driving in Sacramento traffic. A couple tanks netted 19+MPG. First tank was 14.4 heading into a 20 to 30 MPH head wind. I have a K&N FPIK modified for cold air intake, 3" Gibson catback exhaust, Flex-A-Lite electric fans and AMSOIL synthetic lubricants.

A clean or new air filter will help alot more than what you think. Just because the TB may only be alittle bit you dont want no restricted air flow.
When I did an oil change I blew out my filter and went from 11.3 to 12.6, 331 to 360. All my driving is generally in city also.
A little more food for thought... Expirimenting a little bit on a 50 mile trip yesterday. According to the gas mileage gauge
55mph - 22mpg
60mph - 18mpg
65mph - 16mpg
Now i know that gauge isnt totally accurate, but I think I works enough to show how your speed alone effects your gas mileage. All these readings were taken for about 10 miles each.
