I have only seen 12.3-12.7 in town. Live in Phoenix and it is all stop and go. Highway not any better as it is stop and go as well. Just got back from Mexico and only got about 14.5 on the way back!
I'm just repeating what others on this site have said - correct tire pressure, regular maintenance, don't be a leadfoot. I just put new tires and got an alignment and mileage went up about 1 mpg. I'm from Long Island and I'm getting about 11.5 mpg mostly stop and go traffic, highway I get about 14 mpg.
I just suck it up and drive my expy. I knew when I purchased the expy that gas mileage will be bad and there is nothing I could do except maybe try to fit my big butt in a small car ie:civic or something similiar. I don't like paying $2.39 a gallon but what are we to do!
I keep hoping someone makes a sticky thread where people post up little tweaks and mods theyve done that can improve gas mileage. Ive heard somethin bout removing the A4WD fuse and I plan on giving that a shot sometime soon. Another forum on here was talkin bout a couple ounces of acetone would help. Cat back system might help. Underdrive pullies. maybe an electric fan.
No telling how much all these mods do, if anything for gas mileage.
I just drove 2400 miles in my '04 5.4L and got 17.2 MPG on just about every fill up. I've found that if I keep the RPM's around or below 2000 which equates to about 70-75 MPH then I get the higher gas mileage. I have not done any mods or anything to the engine. If I get up to 80-85 it drops to 16 or below. I still have 1900 miles to go back home. I'm thinking of adding a K&N air filter does anyone know how much gain in MPG I would get? I have to fill up tomorrow so will see what I got around town the last tank.

I went that route when my 98 5.4 was still young. Didn't see any improvement in mileage. Did see the oil get dirtier quicker and maybe a little more performace on top end AT THE EXPENSE OF LOW END TORQUE. I also tried the bosch +4 plugs, also not a good idea, lost about 1.5 mpg. FWIW: Stick with the stock paper on the filter. Mine has 117,000 an still runs very well.
It may sound silly, but I find a get a slight increase in mpg if I keep the truck clean and waxed. The wind drag is greatly reduced. Those big side view mirrors are the cause of most of the wind noise in side the vehicle and you can "hear" a difference when they are waxed! I carry a canoe pretty often, otherwise I would remove the roof racks and that would probably add a little as well. At least as much as a K&N filter. Modified exhaust will help some, but by the time you make all the mods, you can probably pay for the gas you would have used.
Its all about speed for me, like the other post if you stay below 2000 I can get almost 18 on the highway, but that's what its mostly used for, or hauling home improvement stuff, local around town I use the wifes little Toyota.
99, 5.4L, 2wd. Made a long road trip last month. One section of rural 2 lane at 65 mph for 165 miles, and then another 100 or so miles of 4 lane at 75 mph, we netted 17.9 mpg. The rest of the trip was 4 lane 70 + mph, and we saw as low as 15.6 and as high as 16.8, all figured by hand. I usually get 12.5 - 13 around town.
