My truck has developed a rattle while hitting bumps at moderate to low speeds. I am not sure but it sounds like it is coming from behind me. Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions?
I have the "Extended Cab". The doors rattle on railroad track and moderate bumps. I clean and lube up the rubber door seals with a good silicone. That seems to help.
I have one also in my '04 ext cab long bed.... sounds like it's coming from the bed area but I haven't been able to track it down... there also sounds like there is a bump in the drive line when changing from a reverse motion to a forward motion. I always come to a complete stop before shifting the auto tranny.
I had a similar problem, and I found it to the the hitch insert (the part that a tow ball is attached to) banging around. As soon as I removed the insert, it went away.
I have it on a CC. Seems like the rear driver side door but I cant figure out where its coming from either. I will remove the hitch and see if that helps.
Look on top of the roof and see if there are any dips or low/high spots. One way to check this is to park on level ground and grab a garden hose. If you see any puddling of water, then you have a defective roof.
When I bought mine ('04 CC Lariat built 10/03) the dealer said my truck came with a "free" 5 yr 75K extended warrenty. When I asked why he revealed that the roof was not put together right. When I test drove it it rattled a few times. The salesman promised me that I could take it in for a quick fix. After 15K miles I still have not taken it in and it continues to intermittingly rattle. My low spot is on the rear passenger side. After it rains or is damp I have a puddle up there. When I start driving water pours down and messes up my windows. Dealer said they would need it about 1 week to fix it.
But since truck is in process of being bought back by Ford for many other issues I'll just put up with it until my '06 arrives.
Good luck with yours!
Wrangler, the reverse-to-foward clunk is common: slop in splines is the apparent cause.
Meangreen, the doors, tailgate, ball mount suggestions are probably more likely the cause, but you might also check your carrier bearing bracket to be sure it's not missing a bolt or something.
