I am very new in the 6.0 ltr diesel owner category. I have been reading a while and listening a fellow worker on what he thinks. WE have been through the very noticeable bump coming from the compressor when it kicks in. However, I have noticed in the mornings or from a extended sit time(3-4 hours) that I have a shutter in the Turbo it seems. For instance, I can back out of my garage and up the driveway to the street-from there to the end of the street it is maybe 150 yards. If I decide to get on it a little harder and let off quickly it seems that the Turbo is spooled up and shutters-nothing major but noticeable. Is this common?
I think this is what WAS referred to as the wastegate actually working. It is NOT a wastegate as you will read over time in here. I am no diesel expert, but mine does the same thing and I have thought this is what is happening. The elder members will chime in--hopefully I am right !!

This is quite common and very normal. The fluttering sound you are hearing is built-up air charge (boost) in the intake and the intercooler escaping back out the air filter. The very reason for this is the fact that the turbocharger on this engine is NOT wastegated rather controlled by variable vanes in the exhaust side of the turbo. When you accelerate hard and then quickly let off the accelerator...whoosh! All that boost has to go somewhere. This is actually called "turbo flutter" however some people, for whatever strange reason, call it "turbo fart." Call it what you will, it is a normal charactaristic of this engine and no harm is being caused.
