Talking Replacing motor mounts

I was going to have some local mechanic replace my mounts, but after being jerked around a few times, I said screw him, and now I'm wondering about doing it myself. What parts and tools do I need to replace the mounts on my '95 5.8L Bronco?

They arent' really that difficult to do yourself. You will need the correct size sockets/ratchet drive, wrenchs, etc for the hardware used on the mounts. You will need to be abel to jack the engine itself up a bit to remove the old mounts. Make sure that other peripheral componenets aren't going to be smashed when you start lifting. Fan shroud, hoses, wiring, etc. Keep in mind that the air diverter valve in the emissions system is back behind the right (passenger) side of the motor almost between the cylinder head and the firewall and when you lift the engine it will tend to push up and BACK so the potential is there to smash the diverter valve. Take an extra moment to inspect all the way around the motor before trying to move it around basically. teh mounts themselves are pretty straight forward. A total of three pieces of hardware for each one and thats about it.

Best bet is to use a pice of heavy lumber like a 2x4 block between the bottom of the oil pan and the saddle on the jack. the idea being that you want to spread the weight of the motor out over a larger area than just the jack saddle when you lift since the risk of denting the oil pan exists. Denting the pan can cause oil sump problems.

They will probably need to slip out from between the lower crossmember and the motor from the bottom.

if ya can get your hands on a cherry picker and do it that way it would easier and safer. do watch out for fan and shroud any lines going to your motor also your tranny. all you need is about 3-4 inches to get the mounts out i think. also check out broncograveyard.com for the mounts if you havent got em all ready. and when i put mine on i had to machine them so they would fit properly so compare to the old ones when ya take em out - matt

Agreed, didn't even think about that possibility, Gimmeice. I'm just used to working with what I've got here.

One more question...do I raise the engine prior to unbolting the mounts or do I unbolt the mounts then raise the engine to slide them out?

I've seen a few of the cherry pickers and the prices look reasonable, but I am not sure. I would think that I need the raise the engine straight up and I am not sure the cherry pickers will do that without unbolting the hood. Is this right?

unbolt them first, otherwise you'll be raising the whole front of the truck, i've done them befor and it's really not that difficult, I used a short piece of 2x12 under the oil pan and a floor jack and follow the precautions stated above...

make a mark around the hood hinges so they line back up properly, i would set up the chery picker so that there is slight pressure to support the motor, and then unbolt the motor mounts just in case the motor slips which i doubt it would . - matt
