I have a 2001. Mine shifted fine(shifted without getting your attention). When I was in the 60k miles it delayed or took a second or two to complete shifts(Im guessing 1-2 2-3). Now I have almost 80k and the time to shift has lengthened. Sometimes the o/d lite will flash until the engine turned off. It does not do this all the time, not everyday. Mine unlike others mentioned does this mostly when I'm gently driving and if I give it hell it shifts as should at those rpm. Just like Jenn I have been asking and checking about this for almost 2 years and until now how I even found any common stories or info on this problem. So far only serussel has found anything that sounds like a fix for what mine is doing. Any other help/additional info would be great!!!!!!!!
I just got my '04 back from the dealer last week. It was shifting very erratically and occassionally just slamming into reverse after a second or two hesitation. They replaced the fluid and the trans solenoid. Runs and shifts great now & I'm crossing my fingers. It's got 32k on it but I do have a 60k extended warranty.
I just had my 01 sport trac looked at and was told it had a "gear ratio incorrect" code. I had the tech at aamco adjust the bands and now it shifts as should and the check engine light stays off and no more flashing o/d off light.
I read a thread telling that these transmissions should be adjusted at the 30k trans services, but I do not believe it ever gets done nor do I believe the service writers at dealerships even know it needs this and techs do the bare minimum to beat the clock since they are commision pay. My main reason for mentioning this is to inform owners to demand this be done at this service interval and though mine is doing fine now we will see how long it last and if truely had affect on my problem.
The Rumor I've heard is that it actually does hit neutral between shifts so that it feels more like a manual. I think it's normal, although with these 5R55's it's hard to tell if something is normal or not. They do have a very weird shift pattern, which I would like if I wasn't afraid for it's reliability. Mine does shift like you're describing, but the opposite. Fine under hard acceleration, but with a pause under normal acceleration. It also shfts kinda late, although I only have the V6 SOHC and a heavy foot...you do the math- small engine, big foot,...
