just drove the 05 explorer and noticed that if you r getting on it alittle it has a delay between shifts. from first to second youll feel a delay then it kicks in smoothly and accelerates. has anyone else with an 05 experienced this. its a 2005 xlt 4x4. thanks guys
My wifes '03 V8 4x4 does the same thing. It is only noticeable when you get on the pedal for hard acceleration. I compare it to almost like the shift of a manual tranny. Very different and I was going to have the dealer check it out before 36,000 miles to make sure everything is fine.
Does the tranny ECM reflash that I have read about take out this awkward pause in between gears? Not sure if I quoted that correctly.
Here is a copy of the post that I put ina couple of months ago for my '04 after I got it back from the dealer for this same problem...
Got it back today and can say that it defiantly has a better feel to the shifts. It does still have a little bit of that "lag" feel in the 1-2 and 2-3 shift (so there may be some truth to the statement above about these transmissions having that "shifting pattern" to them) BUT it is much less pronounced and less duration. For the record - the Taurus they gave me to drive had the same shift feel as my explorer with the new parts does now. So it may not be the smoothest tranny in the world, but I would considerate it more than acceptable now - note that I do not think the Taurus has the same Tranny, I could already see the replies coming - just that another electronic shift tranny felt the same. My 04 ranger with the almost same transmission does have a much "stiffer" feel to it, different program I guess. The part they changed was 4L2Z-7G391-AA Bdy Asy-Trans and 12 quarts of Mercon V. The tech or service manager wrote my long explanation up as "customer states incorrect shift ration between 2nd and 3rd"

I have a 98 sport with the ohc 6 in it. My transmission blew within the first month of owning it, so obviously rock steady tranny's are not fords goal. My tranny has and still does the same thing. If I accelerate hard from a stop, it just doesn't shift. It has gone to 5g's on the tach and nothing, it will shift only when I slightly let off the gas. This doesn't bother me too much because if I feel the need to be driving at 5krpm, well I will drive my stang.
The best way I can explain it is it feels like although it is an automatic, there is actually a little man inside the transmission with a clutch and a gear shifter. It feels just like if _I_ were shifting the truck as a manual.
I've owned 3 Rangers and now 3 Explorers. None of the others did this. Shifting was smooth and with very little of the "manual shift" feel.

Hey TruckLarry - I am glad someone else's assessment is the same as mine. The way it hestitates between gears is like you push the clutch pedal in, move the shifter, and then gas again. Have you taken it back to the dealer? If so, what did they say? I can hear it now, "That is normal".
I know these all electronic solenoid control units shifted funny, but it seems so different under hard acceleration. Normal pedal application and the tranny shifts fine.
I always have the oil changed at the first 1000 miles so I was going to bring it up then.

If you have the SOHC engine, it will hold the shift past 5k because you arent out of the power band yet... Our 99 will shift at like 5900 right before the tach runs out of room, and it pulls all the way there. My dad's company 04 would rev just as high willingly.
thanks guys its my girlfriends car so ill check with the dealer. i have th e05 f 250 PSD and then i jumped in her truck and i was like what the hell, did you get a five speed and they forgot the clutch, lol. but thanks for the replies and ill keep you all posted
Ok I have a 2000 explorer and I have been complaining about this (yes for 5 years) and I had the extended warranty too. However ever time I took it in - the diagnosis was "we can not duplicate at this time" or "it is just the nature of the vehicle". Naturally I am out of my extended warranty as well and 74000+ miles and it seems to be getting worse now. So if anyone finds a rememdy to the problem please let me know. My dealer had "rehauled" my trans 2x and stated that Ford wont do anything more for me.
Do I drive it till it dies?
