My 2005 Explorer enters reverse with a hard clunk most of the time. The u-joints are good and the ring and pinion is good as well. Is it something in the linkage adjustment or timing or could it be internal in the transmission? Shifting into drive is just fine. It is if there is a delay or if someone was to hit the gas pedal before shifting into reverse.
When you have a harsh reverse and drive engagement it is the solenoid body pca or pcb sticking replace pack. For harsh reverse only it is almost exclusively the valvebody in dealer techs experience.
Does anybody know if this is something that can be replaced externally or if by removing the pan one may be able to replace? If it is more than that I will have to have a shop replace it. The Explorer has 195,000 miles on it and has never been in the shop and would hate to break that trend.
solenoid pack and valve body are serviced with trans in vehicle. If you are mechanically inclined it will be simple other than getting tranny fluid in the eyes and hair lol. Setting fluid level will be a PIA need a pump or vacuum filler to get it into the pan after your all done.
