Welp....I USED to drive mine 50 miles every day. My company decided they needed to close down however, so now I have a job closer home that pays about $7 per hour LESS than I used to make. So the truck gets to lounge in the driveway all day long now. Of course I do drive it to work on Saturday which is about 25 miles round trip.........
Heres a thought...All of us with a 7.3l are pushing about 440 cubic inches of raw American Horse Power. And we're getting about 400-420 Foot Pounds of torque. (In todays terms thats 1250-1415 of the Pound Feet everyone else uses nowa days. A pound foot which is a unit of work not a measure of force ...that's marketing for ya) Anyway, I digress; We're also getting anywhere between 12MPG (towing) to about 15-17 (empty). Now, Multiply that displacement out to get the same output from a gasser motor. They only get 8 MPG EMPTY! Using round numbers, $2.60 a gallon for Diesel is a good deal when you compare that Gas would have to be about $1.30 a gallon to get the same Miles Per Dollar! Besides, how many gassers get 450-500 miles on a tank of gas?
LONG LIVE DIESEL FOREVER

Reason: technical explaination
well, put the math to the side. what he is trying to point out is that there is more thermal energy in a gallon of diesel fuel than in a gallon of gas, so, simply put, if you are paying the same amount for a gallon of each, you get more work out of a gallon of diesel than a gallon of gas. to illustrate this... compare a V10 gas to a v8 diesel. the v10 has almost as much power, (ability to do the work), but when all things are equall, the diesel will do the same work while using less fuel. add the fact that diesel engines are built to last much longer than gas engines, and you can make a case that it is more affordable, over the long term, to run a diesel than a gas truck.... lots of different oppinions on this, but i think i could make that case, but the post would be way to long....! LOL...
I live approximately 20 miles from work. That's about 200/week just for work. I put another 100-150 on the weekend. So I figure I put about 350 on per week. I'd say about half of my drive to and from work is highway. If it's not an actual highway, then it's a nice long, straight and fairly level road.
I drive only 12-15 miles a day, or about 120+ miles a week. I try to take my truck on vacations with me if my wife lets me. We just finished driving from Chicago-IL to Atlanta-GA, over to Jonesboro-Ar, up to Milwaukee-WI and back to Chicago. The engine sounded smooth and it seems I got the best mileage yet. Of course the diesel down in GA and AR are probably not winter grade either.
