Warmup?

Just curious, I live in a community and my neighbors dont
appreciate me firing up the deisel 3am to go to work. So I basically
start ,wait a few seconds and cruise away without hitting the gas.
by the time I get on the main road my gauges are barley up. I take
it real slow till I get up to temp then go on my way. Does anybody
see a problem here?

thats what I do also. The owners manual says it is fine to do this. As with any other engine as long as you are not giong out and putting the hammer down before it warms up there should be no negative effect.

I let my truck idle a few minutes. Do your neighbors get upset if you start your truck and let it idle a few min? If my neighbors told me not to warm up my truck....we would have a serious conversation.

Notice he said he starts truck @ 3am.
As a diesel owner i would be a little miffed about crank up if his exhaust was next to my window or something.

When i find myself in this scenario i let it run for about 30 seconds then let the truck creep (little or no throttle) to a spot as near as possible to warm up for a couple a minutes.
A little courtesy goes along way.

A preluber would help a little in this situation i think.

I try to be mindful and considerate of other folks...but, depending on how I was approached about the issue would determine my response.

Keep in mind however that the neighbors ain't contributing to my truck payment either. If damage to my truck was a concern then me and the neighbors would have to figure something else out.

There is disagreement on the effects start and go has on these 6.0s vs. warm up. Some say idle hurts it and others say you should always let her get good and warm.

For me...if it's 40 degrees or below I warm her up for 10 minutes or so. Over 40 degrees and I let her blood flow a little then off we go...albeit gentley til the engine gets warmed up.

Just my opinion though.

I agree that kindness goes a long way.

If I had to be at work at 3AM, that means that I go to bed early (7-8PM). Do they start their cars at that time? Do they make any noise at that time? I know the truck is not silent, but is it really loud enough to wake someone at 3AM?

When looking at driving away with a cold motor, even at slow speeds, it concerns me. I kind of know how metal works, contracting and expanding with temp. and would be interested in what's happening on the cylinder walls as that piston moves about.

My neighbor does the same thing every morning with his service truck, and he hasen`t had any problems. And sometimes here in Missouri it gets down right cold. But he starts it right up and before the idle comes down he is already in gear and gone.

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
I dont know about cold weather being down here in FL, but i have read alot of previous post on this subject. There were so many guys that just jump in and go and so many the wait 10MIN. its really up to you if it was a lease then heck with it i would start her up when idle came down i would be off. 5-10 sec max. I own my truck so even here in FL it was in the 80s here today. if the engine was cold(cant be that cold haha) i give it a good 30sec-1min then i just take it easy till shes warm. Most guys on here have said in the past to try not to run it over 2k till warmed up. about the idling to long well i think you need to worry about wet stacking in your truck warming up for 5min. Probloms from wet stacking would not occur i think it was like over 15 -20 someone said and if you are going to idle over 10 min of so i would concider then getting an idle adjuster. Here in FL it gets down right HOT so in the summer i will run into a 7-11 and get a drink or somthing i let it idle to keep the air on. I have not had a problom yet. Also like when filling up. I keep it idling for a good 15min while the truck fuels up. Have 33k on the truck now. No probloms yet

whether ur in sunny daytona beach florida (like i am on vaction right now) or in pa during the middle of winter (where i hate to say i came to reside in after leaving florida) always let ur truck warm up. My rule of thumb is untill the little engine temp guage is past the white line no rpms above 2000, where its 20 below zero or 85 degrees. When its 15 degrees out ill let it idle for 5-10 minutes, depends on how well i feel in the morning, but i try to let the engine warm up. the point is dont rev ur engine over 2000 untill the temp guage is up..........and dont forget about ur trany guage either
