My sons 2002 Sport Trac trans went completely out (50,000 mi.) the O.D. light kept coming on then it just quit, now it just makes grinding noises. He towed it to the Ford dealer and was told it needed a whole new trans. The trans plus labor= $5000. The threads talk about these trans problems but has anybody been charged that amount.
I was recently quoted ~2000 for a rebuilt transmission (97 5.0L, 4spd auto) and torque converter by a local, and reputable, transmission shop. So if the dealer is putting in new parts in their replacement I would not be horribly shocked at the the ~5,000 number. What kind of warranty do they provide with that? The local shop gives me one year on it. I have heard of other shops that give 2 years. Might be worth considering a rebuilt instead.
K2JJB...that price was for a brand new trans and converter. He was so shocked at that price he just had it towed home. He did'nt ask about a warrenty. He's talking about changing brands even tho he's an A-plan buyer.

i heard from my supervisor that had a 02 that sport tracs that year had something wrong with the trannies. and that problem got fixed the next year and 04.
if the truck just hit 3 years old, the warranty should still be valid. let me know how it works buddy.
if its 5k, i'd go to tranny places online who sell trannies for wholesale price and have a local trans shop put it in.
I agree this is outrageous. It is out of warrenty (3/36000) The dealer told him they knew it was a problem and that Ford won't stand behind it. I will check that website. Thanks.......

Granted different years... but when the trans went on my 92, my mechanic was able to get a Jasper trans for $2200 installed. It came with a 3 year/50,000 mile warranty to boot. So shop around and see what you can get. I just looked up Jasper on the net and they are now coming with a 3 year/75,000 mile warranty and for a 2002 SportTrack/auto/5R55E/5 speed.... list price was about $2500 ... might be worth looking into.
X Ford
Contact, Ford Customer Service! They have out of warranty plans. If they knew about the problem, they will/ may give a lil. Phone then write a letter, get a Sbs for that truck.
I hope this helps.
I just had the tranny fixed in our 2002 XLS. Ours is an early build (built in 01) and the intermediate band broke causing the flashing OD light and no 2-3 shift. There is a TSB for this problem. My repair bill for the tranny work was $2600 and that included the labor, new band, new drum and a new torque converter. We were able to get over 100K miles before in went though.
Five grand seems way steep to me. I got my 91 exp rebuilt by a local shop in town for $1,600. Also have had my 94 F250 E40D rebuilt a couple of times for less than three thousand each time.
It pays to check around some before you commit.
Welcome to the 5R55 coming to bite us in the A-- It's an electronic tranny, so that might be right for a brand new one. See if you can get Ford to cover some of it, and see if you can pick up some kind of warrenty on your Explorer- that one is starting to go as well. I know AAA sells them, don't know if they're any good though. Also see if you can just get a rebuild.
Replaced my 94 tranny and converter at 126K. Got a rebuilt from Ford 36 mo / 3 yr warranty $1800 installed by dealer $500. Used a local garage account at dealer to get it wholesale and then had dealer install it. Works great now.
