best suv around $5000?

doing some wheeling and dealing and might be able to get out of my current xterra payments and into another car and just drop cash for something.

i would have around $5000 to spend for another car, need an suv, no cars, to many exploration trips for a car to handle, plus i like sitting up some. 4x4 and automatic trans also.

so just wondering about inputs from people on what would be a good buy?

full size suv or would mid size work? I would highly recommend the jeep cherokee. very dependable and the 4.0 engine will last 200-300,000 miles with normal maintainance.

mid size is fine, i drive an xterra so nothing smaller than that for sure.

i been thinking about those jeeps also, know anything about them? like what to look for and the best years/buys in that price range?

luckily for me this is sort of jeep cherokee land, lots around here available.

are they gas hogs? i know not to expect 30mpg but something over 10 mpg would be nice.

you may be able to find a 1996-1999 in good condition in your price range. and 96-99 are more desirable than the newer ones. From what I have heard/read the 2000/2001 models were prone to having head cracking issues. I have a 92,and it has been the most dependable vehicle I have ever owned. as far as gas mileage goes, mine would get around 23 on the highway, and it is a 5 speed, but I have heard the auto tranny gets similar mileage. Mine no longer gets 23 as it is lifted and has bigger tires on it. also a few engine mods. might get close to 20 if i could keep my foot out of it!!

I also recomend the jeep XJ cherokee, it's rugged, the 4.0 is awesome and they still use a straight front axle. As the market is swamped with them, there are a lot of good buys to be had.

xj cherokee, still in the 96-99 years?

i was thinking about expeditions also, if i ran across i would give it a look, but the cherokee has an appeal just out of familarity.

i expect all to have over 100k miles, what things should i expect with that? past the normal wear and tear of course. would i expect some tranny work or anything?

I have a 98 Expedition XLT with 168,000 miles and it still going strong with no problems at all. But a bit of warning the gas mileage will be just above 10-16 mpg depending on engine and I have a 5.4 it's due for a tune up so my mileage will go back up. the 3rd row seating is great. They also come in 4X4 too

At 100,000 miles the jeep 4.0 is just getting broke in, as stated, 300,000 miles is not uncommon for these motors. Both the manual and auto are pretty decent. If you were to get an auto, I would change tranny fluid and filter. One of the best ways to get info, would be to lock on to a jeep forum and see what everyone else is saying about thier cherokee's, as for common high mileage problems and so fourth.

I would expect the jeep to need tranny work being a chrysler and all. 4.0 is a strong motor though.

you would be wrong. my 92 has 200,000 and change for mileage with the 5 speed manual that hasn't been touched. I bought the jeep when it had 160,000 miles on it. Not sure about those miles, but I can tell you the last 40,000 miles have been pure HELL on the tranny. Mudding, slipping the clutch to smoke the tires, oversize tires, you name it. Tranny hasn't complained once!! I have also heard the auto tranny is a very good tranny. www.naxja.org is about the best cherokee forum out there if you want to do some research for yourself.

You'll be quite wrong. what makes Jeep wranglers and cherokees of this era so great is thier lack of chrysler corp garbage. For instance my 91 yj Has an AMC engine, a japanese made transmission, new procsee x-fer case and dana axles. The only chrysler corp parts are the surpisingly reliable fuel injection system.

Either an auto or stick an XJ will have a quality japanese made transmission if it's made after 1990 or so.

Before that they had a horrible french built manual tranny, the japanese manuals are pretty good. In around 2000 they went with NV tranny, it was better yet.
