I don't know if this is the right place for this or not, so feel free to move it if necessary.
I am looking at buying a 93 Explorer XLT 4.0L Auto. It has 156k miles. What are some common problems I should look for before I make a decision on purchasing it or not?
How many miles on the transmission? If it has 156K original miles on the original transmission, there's no telling when the transmission will fail. A few get 200K out of the A4LD, many don't. That would be the big concern.
Apart from that: radius arm bushings are common. Does the engine ping under load (the vast majority of the time this is easy to fix)?
If 4WD, does the shift motor work? Do the auto hubs work properly (engage when they are supposed to, stay disengaged the rest of the time), or has it already been converted to manual hubs?
Also, check for rust in the rear door rocker panels and rear fender wells. Mrshorty is correct.... biggest concern should be the trans. Seems like 150-175 k miles is the magic number of when they fail. Try and test drive it when the engine/trans is completely cold. Check for slippage or hesitation when going into fwd or rev. Any slippage or hesitation, walk away from it or plan on spending$1500-2000 for trans work. Good luck!
Ok, I think I've decided to stay clear of that one because of the mileage. I found a 92 Explorer 4x4 at a local dealer for $3,955. It has 27,000 acutal miles on it. It was owned by an elderly couple.
A 92 with 27k seems almost impossible. If you are buying it from a dealer, ask for a car fax report. If it's been titled out of state, or leased, or auctioned, then the 27k is bogus. Just a suggestion.
I've already asked them for the report. It says it was titled in a nerby local town with 40 miles on it. Then it 05, March, it reports it being traded in at this dealership with 27k miles on the odo. It's in way to good of condition to have 127k, the interior smells and looks new. Exterior is flawless with no rust.
