6.0 Trans cooler question....

Hey guys,I scored me a very low mileage 6.0 trans cooler(25 row) today(for what I think is a very good price)..$50.00,the fluid was very clear and didn't smell burnt at all.I have a 99.5(late99)and do not have the trans cooler in the radiator, isn't it just a matter of plumbing the lines to make it work? What fittings would I need to get, what size( and how much) trans. rated hose would I need to get and also what side is best for inlet,...drivers side or passenger side? Thx for your help and thx for reading this long question...
Phil

The cooler lines come up the passenger side of the pickup.

You need whatever fittings it takes to get from 1/2" lines on the 6.0 cooler to the stock 3/8" lines, and a 90* for both helps as well since the lines come out the bottom and there isn't a lot of room to make the turn.

Or at least that's how is on the 31 row cooler.

yes thats correct, I went to Napa and piced together some right angle brass fittings, Unless your adding the Water to Air (W-T-A) cooler then you need to go to Ford and buy a new retrun line. I have those P/N's if you need em.

No,Im just removing the stocker and installing the 6.0 cooler. I've been out looking at it for awhile and I think I have a plan...,It seems I remember Mark K talking about which side to be the inlet for the best cooling, but I think he was talking about a cooler for an application that had a radiator cooler too.Should the inlet be the drivers side or passenger side? Thx...Phil

it shoudln't really matter because the fluid has to travel the same amount of distance either way to get back to the trans..

I just did mine tonight. What a PITA. Glad it's done, but I'd rather pull the turbo...

I got the pieces for the right-angle at Lowes. Pics will be posted tomorrow.

Here is what I used for adapters.

3/8ths "Street Elbow", 3/8ths barb adapter, 1/2" barb adapter, 1/2-3/8ths threaded adapter. I used about 4" of 1/2" power steering line to connect these to the cooler (just enough to clear the barbs), then ran the hose similar to how Kris did in his pics. I thought I took pics of it, but I guess not. It was a bit of a trick getting the cooler in there and then attach the hoses. I finally decided to attach the 3/8ths hose to it and feed it out each side (the 3/8ths barb on the elbows face outward toward the fenders) as I lowered the cooler into place. I then cut the tubing coming from the driver's side feed to the radiator, turned it 180°, and attached driver's side of the cooler right there. I ran the passenger side from the steel line directly to the passenger side of the cooler with new line. Mine looks just like Kris', so I'll see if I can find his pic...

Here's sort of how I did the driver's side (thanks, Kris!! ).

The only difference is that I cut mine after the first right-angle bend out of the radiator and attached it with double hose clamps. I guess I could get pics of that. LOL

The other one comes out the opposite side and runs straight to the steel line from the trans up by the block, like I mentioned in my earlier post:

Joe it's pretty obvious by those pictures that you live down south.

Where's all the rust?

Those aren't mine -- that would be Kris' rust.

I also left the flaps in mine, so you can't see much of the adapters in place. I go out and grab a few pics of mine here shortly...
