I have a 65 f250 and the shifter has about 6 inches of play.
My first concern is: can I tighten that up without pulling the while thing out?
Second concern: The three speed is sweet for tough pulling, but I need to make it a little more road friendly. The first gear being mainly a granny gear, with the two remaining, I'm looking at 35-40 tops. Is something wrong with it or should I swap it out?
I am new to trannies and gear differential, so give me the trannies for dummies version.
(I understanding of how it works, just never taken one out or worked on one, so this area of the auto is new to me...)
If you have alot of slop, then it's time to rebuild the column. All the bushings are toast. Also don't forget to replace the ones for the shift rods at both ends. All those loose bushings add up. Best way is to order the stuff to do the job, then pull the column out of the truck and do it on a bench. I can send you a pic of the column if you don't have a shop manual. Send me a email at bmccloskey at sbcglobal .net . ( replace the at with @ and delete the space I put in to fool the censors.)
