My SROD doesn't always allow me to get into third gear, and i'm convinced that it is an issue with the shifter. It doesn't grind when you go to third and it works fine when you find it. When coasting, it will sometimes pop out, like its not all the way in there. My shifter is really ragged and worn out and may have been modified over the years. Can someone post a pic of what their shifter looks like, so I can decide if I need to start searching harder for a new shifter? I pulled the transmission a few months ago, and had it checked out by the best transmission shop in my area, and they said it was in perfect working condition.
popping out indicates something near a synchonizer or a gear retainer has broken....the srod is a nice LITTLE tranny, does not take much I fear to bust one
If you pull the shifter out of the transmission you'll probably find the little nylon bushing is shot. That can cause all sorts of issues. I have been told by a few people that have owned them that the SROD is not bad if you don't abuse it.
I check the bushing in the turret, and other than being installed backwards, it was in good condition. It doesn't pop out often, and only when coasting. This unit was rebuilt a few years back, and sat because the truck needed other repairs to get back on the road. I played it safe and pulled the trans and took it to a shop to have it checked over before driving farther than around the block. They said it was in perfect condition, and that if there was a problem, it most be with the linkage. It looks like a PO may have modded the bottom of the shifter, as there was a couple of welds holding the top to the bottom. These welds recently gave out, and I had to redo them in order to keep her in service. I think the alignment of the top of the shifter to the bottom may prevent it from fully engadging 3rd gear. I'm trying to locate on in a junkyard, but haven't had any success so far.
Years ago the one in my 82 when I first got it had no third, it was a combination of a very worn shift fork and a worn syncroniser...
I just tossed it in favour of a NP435 though, as the truck had 2.75 gears.
If you are trying to locate an SROD, aka RUG dont limit yourself to fords...jeeps have em. and if ford only dont limit yourself to trucks - almost all of the small car 3spd +od trannys were srod - mustang, granada, comet etc.
2 SRODs as of a week ago in my local boneyard in WV....(I was scouting for linkage parts for the clutch)
I think I just need the shifter, but I assume they are different for every vehicle. I wish someone had a picture of their shifter, there aren't any good ones on the internet, and i'd like to compare a known good one to what I have.
It's dark here now otherwise I would take a pic for you. I have one in my garage from a donor truck that I am cleaning and re-doing the gaskets on. I'll try to get a pic tomorrow if you need one. I would think that unless the shifter is really messed up that it would probably be a shifter fork or syncro, although it is possible.
Thanks, it would be very helpful if you could post a pic. It may be an internal issue, but I would like to rule out the shifter before I pull it out of the truck again.
Thanks man, I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to take some pictures for me. Did yours originaly have a large spring going from the main stick, down to the triangular base? The one thats currently in my rig looks like this:
Not a problem, always glad to help out when I can. Mine is exactly how you saw it in the pictures. That's how it was when I pulled it out of the truck I'm parting out.
