aftermarket shifter?

Just wondering if anyone has attempted to install an aftermarket floor shifter into thier automatic tranny. not sure how these shifters work wether or not they are full mechanical or full electronic or a little bit of both. i would figure that if they are full mechanical that one would be able to make one work. if someone can tell me how the shifter works or wether or not theres aftermarket shifters out there.
thanks

I believe that the factory shift lever consists of three parts: 1) A lever that connects to a cable (with a sheath around it) that runs down to a lever on the drivers side of the transmission, 2) a switch/light unit on the end of the handle that controls the overdrive function and also serves as an indicator for transmission problems, and 3) an indicator that runs off the arm/cable assembly to show what gear you have selected.

In theory, all of these items could be relocated. I don't know of an aftermarket shift control for this application.
