Robbgt - I have Rancho RSX's on my truck all around and they do just fine. I got them for the same reason - I couldn't afford Bilsteins and needed shocks - 1 front and 1 of the back stockers was leaking. They have done just fine for me and made a big difference from the stock leaky shot ones. I tow occasionally with my truck and they handle great - no complaints. If you can get them for that price - I'd say go for it.
Hey no problem.... I just found a site that has Rancho RSX5000 for 42 bucks a shock, around 180 total price with tax and shipping for all 4. Might go that way... so those are the same as monroe's hu?? thanks

If you want a smooth ride I would stay away from the 5000's. I have a set on a my Ram and they are very stiff and harsh, plus I have had to replace the lower bushings on them. I know a guy with a Chevy that had the same issues. I have ridden in a couple trucks with Explorer Pro Comp ES9000's and they were a nice shock, firmer ride but not harsh. I may go that route for my X. The ES9000's are cheaper also. Summit has them for $34 each and $5 for the boots.
EDIT: My experience with the 5000 series was the RS5000 not the RSX so they may ride a little better.

Do billenstens have a torx head on the bolts they come with? i remember reading that somewhere?
I have them on the F-350 4x2.
On another post everyone else said that they were regular bolts on the 4x4.
Which every shock you do decide on it would be wise to shop both internet and your local parts store. sometimes if you bring in the price from the internet the parts store will match it. Just my .02

Thanks I might give them a shot and see how they work...
I just put monroe reflex on the front of my truck, big improvement over stockers. I got them for $70.00 canadian($55-$60 american) at local parts store. Going to do the back ones next week.
Hey guys... time for some new shocks!! I'm still rolling around on the stockers and there starting to leak.... Any sugestions for a 97 supercab longbed 4*4, I only do occational towing..... Also i'd rather not spend a ton of cash on them which means that billensten's are out for now... what do you suggest?? thanks

Pretty ironic. I stopped in local Auto Zone (O'fallon, MO) just yesterday morning and order Bilstiens for my 97 F350 c/c long bed 4 x 4. $59.99 plus tax. Will be Fed Ex on Weds.
Anybody got any tips on removing the old ones? Since they don't come with hardware, want to be careful on removing bolts. I attempetd this last fall, with no luck. I soak all bolts & nuts with penetrating oil for 3 days prior. I took nuts off lwr rears but the bolt would not budge, so I gave up. Anybody else evperience this? What's the secret?

Wow congrats on getting a good price on the bilensten's. My local shop wants 70 bucks plus tax. Right now it's 80 bucks to put gogo juice in my truck, so i'm trying to save every penny right now and 40 bucks each is a little more manageable. as for removing the shocks, yesterday i wanted to make sure i could get all the bolts loose before i went to pick up the shocks. I couldn't get mine off by hand, so i sprayed them with "PB Blaster" (I love that stuff!!) and broke out the handy impack gun and hit the bolts at 90 PSI to get them loose. If you break them, you can allways ride on just the leafs to the local shop to get some new ones... Good luck!!
I can't say I've ever heard a # for that really. I didn't get mine tight enough by hand one time and got a clunking noise a month later that took me for EVER to figure out it was a shock bolt that was a little loose. I use an impact wrench to hammer 'em tight now!!

Thanks Cat_man... I'll just hit them with the impact gun till it stops.... thanks... ALSO wanted to let you know i decited not to go rancho.... Since they are very similar to Monroe Shocks, and i don't feel like waiting for the rancho's to ship, I'm going to pick up 4 Monroe Magnum shocks that are made for trucks w/ a GVWR over 8500, only cost 39 bucks a shock, (don't really like the yellow but oh well) I'll have them in later in the week and i'll let you know how i like um.... thanks again
Just be carful not to compress the bushing too much. It's mostly a guessing game, you want them tight but too tight will just tear up the bushing in fast order. The Bilsteins actually had a picture of too tight, too loose, and JUST RIGHT. Here's a link to "how to install your bilsteins" from eshocks. It isn't the same as the pictures they provided in the boxes, but I hope it helps. I don't know what ever happened to poly bushings. Hope this helps.
