Yes I just put one in my 95 4x4 last weekend.I used the B&M shift improver kit and it made a hell of a differance.I got it from Summit Racing for $60 and if you can read, follow directions, operate a drill and turn a wrench you can do it too.I had never done one before, but their instructions cover every question you might have.I put in the street/strip kit and compared to stock it shifts more aggresive and is a very positive shift.Good luck
No I dont get second gear, but then of coarse I'm running 32in BFG's and have a 4x4 w/very hiGH 3.31 gears but at least I know the trans will last a little longer w/out the slippin'.
Windsor, Do you get a head jerk now when it shifts? I want to improve the shifting but I don't want the kids to hit the back window with their heads every time the pick-up shifts. Thanks
i put the b&m transpak in my 89 f150 4x4 aod i did the firmest satge of the kit. it keeps the trans 15-20 degrees cooler but still wont chirp the 39 inch super swampers even with my vortech s-trim and an 13 psi pulley installed but it did make a real improvement with firm positive shifts..ot
Hey there,I put a shift kit in my 93 flareside e4od about a sometime in 94. I can't remember what maker it was but it came with a step-by-step video and instructions. If it weren't for the heavy brush guard on the front, the front would probably lift off at wot.I'm running stock 3.05 gearing and 235/75/r15 tires. At normal throttle the shifting is not as aggressive but still very positive.(Not uncomfortable)I was told this kind of shift kit is much better than the plug-in type.Hopr this helps. Deadeye,I got the street version in it and its got a aggresive shift but not head-jerking,but the more throttle you give it the more aggresive it gets.Good luck Windsor
How involved did you have to get into the tranny? My dads 1997 GMC Sierra with 4L60E auto tranny has got a slight slip between 3rd and 4th and a pretty good slip in 1st/2nd shift at WOT...I'd like to think that a shift kit could tighten that up and help save the life of the tranny, slipping means heat, and heat is bad!
Kevin,I had to drop the pan, valve body and disassemble the valve body to get to separator plate which I had to drill nine holes and change a few springs and change springs in valves in bottom of trans. The instructions are pretty much cut and dry,but I say in w/your dads tranny that the clutches are already toast and would recommend a overhaul.
Even with only 60k miles on it?
I'm going to drop the pan on it soon and change fluid to synthetic for sure and change the filter in a couple weeks, its been a jiffy lube wonder most of its life so I dont know what fluid they use when they change it (top it off)
Should I be looking for debris in the fluid as I drain it out? It doesn't seem like its shot when driving it, just at WOT does it slip slightly, at around 4-4500 RPM it slips pretty noticably.
Kevin,If the fluid smells burnt or isnt blood red I might be concerned but my trans has 67K on it and it slipped at higher RPM's but you made it sound like your dads trans was a high mileage one.But anyway when you drop the pan look for metal of any kind or burnt fluid.Dont worry about the black film on the inside of pan and other parts, this is normal.I would only be worried if there is metal on the magnet in the pan or if the fluid smelled burnt.Put a shift kit in it and enjoy!! I have one of B&M's #####+Plus electronic shift enhancers on my truck (E4OD trans), and although it does make the shifts a lot firmer, I wouldn't recommend it.
Most of your shift kits won't modify the 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th shift (or will just lightly raise the pressure) because these are the primary driving gears. The Shift+Plus I have raises the fluid pressure for ALL shifts, and the 2nd to 3rd is WAY to firm. The 3rd to 4th shift is acceptable I guess, but my "Big Red Brick" of a truck is constantly shifting between 3rd and 4th gears going down the interstate that the firm shift gets annoying.
Thank god I can turn it off though, or I'd probably have yanked the whole thing.
