It increases line presure which makes it shift faster and firmer rite? I think thats right lol. Im not sure if they are needed for anything relitivaly stock for a bronco. In my case my dads powerstroke with a 140 horse chip needed one or the trans wouldnt last a day. So far its holding up good.

A shift kit is designed to increase line pressure as stated above. It reduces friction which cause more heat and fast wear on the transmission internal components. I firmly believe that anyone with an Automatic transmission that isn't covered under some kind of warranty needs to have a shift kit installed. In addition, install a large transmission cooler. They are worth their weight in gold.
There are different stages of shift kit. For the stock vehicle, a simple transgo kit is recommended by many mechanics. Transgo has been around a long time, and they make relatively inexpensive kits from mild to wild. Bottom line, they know what they are doing, and they do it well.

Quick... yes, but definitely messy. It typically involves droping the tranny oil pan to change a few small parts, so you'll need to refill it afterwords. An automatic tranny isn't much more than a series of multi-plate clutches and planetary gear sets. The worst thing you can do to a clutch is slip it under power, and smooth seamless shifts do exactly that. Shift kits extend the life of a tranny by speeding up the shifts and increasing line pressure which puts more force on the clutches and minimizes slipping. On a side note computer controlled trannys can be similarly moded with a tuner.

I would not consider it a bolt on. They do however come with great instructions (at least the transgo kits that I have purchased have). Just remember, when it comes to your transmission, don't go cheap. Many things on an engine can break and be replaced. Something goes bad in a transmission and you usually have to rebuild or replace because whatever went bad takes out everthing else.

Hi Matt,
Are you saying that you recomend the transgo? How about the shifts now? I dont care about silky smooth shifts, but I dont want to snap my neck either.

I have a 94 bronco, I believe it has the AODE. Would I be able to put a shift kit in, or do I have to use a controller like mentioned above? Where can I get one?

Hello Helrich: I do recommend transgo, simply because the instructions are very detailed, and they have been doing this for a great number of years. The shifts will be firm, but will not snap your neck.
Hello stangdart: Transgo also makes a kit for the AODE. I'm not exactly sure what is required for the computer, but I would imagine that it would be minimal. Do a google search, I'm sure someone out there has done one.

It's a 5.0-the transgo site says it's either the aode, or the 4r70w. :got me:

The kit that you would be looking for in an AOD bronco regardless of engine is the TransGo AOD-HP. You can find them on ebay all day long.. :-)
