Thanks! Yeah I am not too worried about it, because I have beat the hell out of this engine and it has held together just fine so far...the 300 will take it though.
mine did the i wanna kick mysefl until i fixed my ground. my carb popped every so often too... lol it didnt do it till decided to put straight 30 weight in her. now she only does it on cold days (73 or less) or on a chilly morining. if its hot, life is good. no pops no hard times. im also ud\sing the top o line Purlator filter. its on its second change, but i tend to change oil every once a month/ 1000 miles, but that time i had 500 on her.
Fram filters have a PAPER anti drain back valve in them, that quickly fails. I use motorcraft filters and don;t have an issue with cold start knock. The last motor I had that did was a 1982 E350 with a worn out 351w in it.. 165k miles and the oil got changed when the po decided he felt like it (10 to 15k miles on average).
This is a hard one to diagnose. If it's the lifters you will hear more of a sharp tapping sound, if it's the mains or rods then it's more of a muffled thud or knock. I know that's sounds a little weird but if you have worked on engines with either of these problems before you can pretty easily decipher which it is. The more details the better.
my 81 had a 300 and when it was cold it would clatter till it warmed up.all it is is the check valve is stickin.nothin to worry about unless it starts constantly clatterin.try changing oil and put marvel mystery oil in it,run it a few days and see if it clears up.
Don't get me started on those snake oil cure alls... Do not mess with your oil formulation. MMO, Slick50, Lucas Oil Stabilizer... all that crap does is tool around with your oil and makes things worse (they foam, and have no proper use in your oil (PTFE doesn't belong in a motor silly)). Use a good filter, use a good oil, and all your problems will be solved.
