my old man's 92 flareside has a 4.9 efi, wehn started first i n the morning or after sitting about 15 minutes it knocks for about 3-5 seconds then clears up, the oil is clean, the oil pump produces generous pressure, and the motor doesnt knock at all after the 3-5 second period. anyone else get this problem?

I think it's the type of oil filter used. Make sure you use one with an anit-drainback valve. I am experiencing the same problem running a filter from Carquest, but will switch back to Motorcraft next oil change.
by the way, the truck also cuts off after started in real cold weather, then starts up fine the second time, i hear this could be the 6 way selector valve, anyone else have this problem?
I am not sure but some vehicles, (older), that I have seen have a oil pressure switch installed. This switch will NOT allow the engine to fire until the oil pressure is up to snuff. Normally the engine will start then stall until the second go at it. Just a thought. Jake.
i had same clatter until i switched to wix filters that don't drain back. ironically, like jake said, my truck used to take two attempts at starting until i switched!
I would like to take this time to say its could very well be the main bearings knocking till the oil hits them then they quiet down, common on 302's and 300's
I always had that problem with a Pennsylvannia crude based oil. Like Pennzoil or Quaker State. Doesn't do it with Castrol, Havoline, Valvoline, or Trop Artic. Motorcraft oil didn't use to do it till they changed the formulation several years ago, now it does it too.
I don't know if it is the oil or the additives, but it makes a difference for me.
I've tested every brand I could get my hands on in my 88 4.9l....the only brand that works properly, even after an overnight sit is..of course..WIX. It's got to have something to do with the filter mounted horizontally on this engine, other brands have anti-drain backs, but yet still lose there oil after ayou stop the engine. Get you a WIX filter and enjoy some comfort in knowing that your filter retains oil while the motor isn't running.

cool thing with 300 is that there's plenty of room for a remote filter or even two filter remote.i plan on getting the two filter for extra protecton cooler oil plus 1 extra qt of oil
My 84 F150 300 does rattle a bit when I first start it in the morning. It stops after a few seconds. The weird thing for me is, when ever I change my oil, it rattles for a day or so but only a idle. It's not a hard rattle, it kind of sounds like a diesel, it does discipate once it's warmed up. I have checked the compression, I got 159-160 psi across the board. The oil pressure guage is pegged all the time. It has done this ever since the engine was rebuilt. I broke it in with SAE 30w, and I have been running 10w30 Valvoline ever since every 2k miles (I run her hard). The engine has around 70k on it, I run Lucas oil stabilizer in it every other oil change. I have been thinking about going to 10w40 Valvoline Maxlife. I almost forgot to mention, I run with Purolater filters too. I have had good luck with them so far any of you guys use them too? I too have been thinking of going to an auxilary oil cooler...can't hurt. It's a super strong running 300 six, I'll keep it that way as long as I can.
I believe it's just the lifters pumping up. My wifes car a 1979 Mercury Capri with a 302, just over 30k on rebuild does this at every cold start, I run 10-40 Valvoline syn blend, and a Fram filter. I run the same stuff in the 351 in my mustang, but it never makes the noise on a cold start. Just part of the vehicles personality I guess.
