My friend and I were at coffee today, and he just came back from 2 months in Florida. He said that his tranny didn't seem to shift the same way in and out of overdrive. He has the 03 F250 6.0L auto.with 27K, and he says no matter what he does with the tow mode button, it still shifts into overdrive.
My question then is, does the tow haul mode keep the vehicle from going into overdrive? Or is it just to make a firmer shift pattern? Or is it a combination of the two, maybe someone out there can explain this to a couple of newbies to diesels. Another thing he mentioned is that he must slow down below 70 to make the tranny shift into the tow mode downshift operation, which I think is normal as the motor would over rev if it downshifted above 70. Any thoughts to pass along at the next coffee shop meeting would be helpful.
Thanks,
Barry
I asked forum to respond to same question 2/22/05. Find the thread on page 18. Tow Haul is NOT like OD lockout! Mine still drops into OD occasionally even with a 9,000# backhoe sitting on a 4,500# trailer in tow. I would rather it did not go into overdrive, as it makes me nervous about tearing up the tranny. Good luck, and I hope you have as good luck with your 6.0L as I have had.
Tow/haul mode is NOT an overdrive on/off switch. If the tranny determines that the truck should be in overdrive, it will shift there. What tow/haul does is going up a grade, if the tranny has to downshift out of overdrive, it will wait until it senses that it is ok to do so. The tranny learns and sense, so if it feels that overdrive is OK it will shift into it, An example of this is if you are driving on a level surface, usually no matter what weight you are pulling. By shifting into overdrive when it is OK to do so, it increases fuel economy. If you're going up a 6.5% grade towing 12K, trust me, it isn't going to go into overdrive until you level off.
I use the tow haul when I tow my #7000 trailer and let the trans do what ever it wants. build 01-21-04. never had a problem and I like what it does. Goes into OD on level ground about 50/55....Down shifts all the way to first when stopping...Good Luck
This question has popped up several times lately. There is a difference in the tow/haul button and o/d off in other trucks. They do exactly as they say- one turns the overdrive shifting off, the other firms shifts and aids in slowing by downshifting. There seems to be some confusion. I have 2 04 psd with the tow/haul- was the 03 tranny different?
My '03 tranny same as '04s and '05s, as far as I know. Has tow/haul, and it works well. It does downshift all the way to 1st as needed to help with braking.
