Hello,
Ive been looking for a factory cd player for my 97 f-150 4x4 on ebay and all I can really find are cd players from 98 and newer. I have a stock cassette player now, Will newer models fit my truck? They look like the same size and have the same little holes as mine but they say it fits this year and that year but not a 97. Anyone know if they are the same size and have the same plugs?
I hope to not be called an idiot here, but here goes. Due to my inexperience, I'll ask a silly question. Are you sure there isn't one already? The reason I ask is that when I bought my 97, neither the dealer or myself knew a 6 disc changer was factory installed. Silly, I know, but they put it in a tight spot and noone noticed it. I can only hope the same for you. i found mine a few days after buying and I remember how cool it was to find out I had it.
I hope that it were true but I dont think so, I seen on some of the units for sale they had controls to advanve cd's and mine does not. But what the hell, Where did they hide it?
I have the extended cab and it is mounted behind the driver next to the rear seat. At a quick glance, it could be hidden by the seat. There's sorta a small "cubby hole" where it nicely fits.
Thanks for the reply's but I have no disk changer.
This is what im looking at. Anyone know if this type will fit my truck? 97 f150 xlt 3 door extended cab 4x4 4.6 ltr 5 speed standard.power doors/locks
this is what is usually posted for sale on ebay. Nothing for a 97.
On ebay iten #7962257152
The cd controls on the lower button are casette controls on mine.
I'm not exactly sure what fits what but I think if you do a search in the forum you'll find some more answers.
If it was me I would buy an aftermarket head unit before I'd spend money on a stock Ford one. An aftermarket one might not cost much more, will sound better and will probably last longer. I've replaced lots of stock Ford decks because they don't work.
If you're into MP3s at all, most aftermarket decks will play those too. It's nice being able to burn 6 hours of music onto 1 CD
The ebay 7962257152 one is exactly the same as my wife's Exploder had until it started overheating and not working. Now she has a JVC and it sounds way better and looks pretty decent too.
If you are looking for a cheap solution for the CD player problem, goto Walmart. They have a 6-Disk MP3 cd changer that has a RF modulator which will interface with any deck. I think that it is like $100 and you have a little changer control that you would mount on your dash so you can see what cd and song is on. Almost 99% of all cd changers have the RF option and all you have to do is supply power and plug your stock FM antenna behind your deck into it and you can listen to cds on the FM channel that the modulator specifies. That way you would have cassette, cd and regular stereo all in one. If you want to upgrade to an in dash unit, go aftermarket. They have quick wire harness connectors and allows you to put in the deck in no time flat. If you have any specific questions let me know and I can help, as I am a certified ICE installer.
Thanks for the input.
I found this site http://oem-auto-accessory.com/factory_ford_radios.html
And it looks like I have an M100 plug and I havent seen any of those on ebay only m100 plugs.
What do you suggest for a AM/FM cd player that will be easy to install?
I have a long ride to work and need to crank some heavy metal cd's to stay awake.
Thanks for your reply.

Mark, your best bet is to go out to a local audio shop and pick up a decent deck, like a Sony, Clarion or Pioneer, and pick up the Metra Harness for it. Then all you would have to do is connect the deck to the Metra harness, which will have all matching color coded wires and then plug it right on into your trucks radio harness. It is an easy install and also I think if you purchase a deck at circuit city, they will install it for free.
If you decide to do it yourself, you will need a DIN converter because the stock radio is larger than an aftermarket and the harness. Below is the part numbers...
Go to your local stereo shop and find what you like and get the price of it and then get on your computer and search the radio part number on www.froogle.com and sort from lowest price first. you will save a ton of money. I just bought a pioneer deh-p670 for 143.00 shipped to my door. You will like the aftermarket radio a lot better. A dash kit and wiring harness will cost you about 30.00 to 35.00 for both.
I did a search for a 6disc in dash changer to replace my 1 cd player I have now. I found a whole bunch on EBay. Check the plug on the back of your to make sure what you are buying. 97 -2003 use a 2DIN chassis. The only thing to look for besides the plug, is the way that it mounts. Make sure it has the four holes in the face or it will not go in. (Thats if what yours has now). Now I know that in some later years, the top back of the stereo unit was cut down for fit to the internal dash...pull yours to see if it a different shape or just a full square box. Most on EBay wont give a plug # but just show a picture of it.
If you decide to go aftermarket, then the other guys are right....go to Best Buy or Circuit City. They almost always have sales and they will do the install for you.

Thanks guys great info in here!
Ill shop around and see whats best for me. Those disk changers that play on an fm channel do they sound good and have good power?
Thanks again, Mark
Yeah, RF modulation has come a long way and sounds really good. It is really easy to install and is compatible with anything that has an antenna. I have done a fair share of installs and have yet to have a problem with interference.
