A fellow board member turned me onto this engine. It came out of a '52 F1. The seller claims that it's a 215. He also stated that the engine belonged to a school district since being purchased new and was never replaced, but rebuilt to 0.010. The engine has a tag to support the rebuild. However, from other pictures that I've seen of '52 215s, the valve cover looks different; note the position of the oil breather.
Here's a 215 from a running '52:
Here's what's for sale:
Is the above engine a 215 or am I just being silly and over examining it?
Thanks, Ilya

My parts books (48-55) has a drawing of a 215 just like that with the same exact valve cover. It shows the oil cap farther back like that. It say "1953- 6 cyl OHV 215 CID Models J and JH" which are P series vans on F-350 or F-500 chassis. It's a 215. The conventional trucks had the cap in front and the P series had it farther back for access thru the engine cover.

50 F-1
Let's see if I got this correct. The engine is from a '53 P series (parcel van)? Heavier duty, maybe?
Which is the correct valve cover for a conventional truck, the one in the first picture or the one in the latter pictures?
Either way, this engine would be as correct as I can get at this time for my '52 Panel, right?
THe first pic has the correct valve cover for your panel truck. Only the parcel delivery series had the other cover, nothing else. P series had a different carb with the remote air cleaner. It's as close as you're gonna get right now!

Thanks. I guess I have to make arrangement to travel to SoCal to get the engine. I may know of where I can get the proper valve cover. The seller has the carb/air cleaner to go with the engine.
I have the remote air cleaner and different carb from the '52 P5 from which I pulled another inline 6 from.
I have this engine from a '52 F-6 conventional truck. It could have replaced the original engine but this is the engine that was in the truck when I bought. In fact it's still sitting in the front frame rails. It has the oil cap toward the back.
Here's a good one for you. In 52-54 books, there was 2 covers listed, depending on the depth of the recess in the covers for the stud grommet. In 55, they replaced the 2 into one with a 55 car part number. In later years, they replaced it again with a 59 car number for both the 215 and 223. These covers were probably swapped every which way when they were replaced or rebuilt.
The seller provided me with the following information about the engine:
Drivers side manifold casting number is EAA 9430A
Drivers side block number casting towards rear of engine EAA -6015
Is it still a '52? I think so, but would like reassurance because I have to drive south to L.A. and back home in one day. That's 10-12 hrs in the truck. I don't want to do it if it's the wrong engine.
