High performance ignition systems?

Hey guys, just curious about some ignition systems. i have an 83 f250 with a 73 429 and am looking into buying either an accel 300+, msd blaster, msd 6a, crane HI6, (the jacobs is a bit pricey) or some other kind of ignition box and coil. i would love to be able to trust all the adds...in which case whatever i buy will be "better than the rest" and give me gobs of horsepower and torque, at least a couple miles per gallon, instant start ups, and completely miss-free operation...however im not buying that quite yet. what kind of experiences have you guys had using these types of modifications?

I've got the MSD 6A and it starts faster, 1-2mpg more and has stronger acceleration around the upper RPMs, revs freer too.

msd is a very good source for the ignition system. you also might want to think about what kind of driving you do or want to do. i off-road alot so my search kept me in the 4000rpm and lower range. so read up any 4 wheel magazine has at least 5 different types of ignition systems to visit on the net. and yes i have a msd 6-offroad ignition.

I too have a MSd-6A ignition and TFI coil in my truck. I do have easier/faster startups, better mpg and some more power across the whole rpm range. I took my truck to the local emissions store and did a before and after test. After install the MSD-6A the truck runs a little cleaner on the exhaust too!

I have an MSD 6a, TFI coil and their adjustable timing control in my 89 F150 302. The system works well, especially the timing control, it's convenient to adjust the timing to the grade of gasoline you are using. As far as Jacobs goes, I purchased their top of the line street version (pro street ultra team, I believe) about 5 years ago and it would not function correctly unless I used stock type ignition wires. It produced a misfire at low to mid RPM's under load. Could not see paying so much for a system that did not work together as designed. Using high resistance wires would defeat the purpose of the systems energy output by limiting the current to the plugs. I returned it and they had the nerve to charge a restocking fee.

thanks for the replies guys, quick question? has anyone out there used an accel 300+ or know of anyone who has... and if so, how does it compare with the others, what kind of gains? im thinking that all the multi-spark, capacitive discharge units have gotta be pretty much the same thing, any thoughts?

hey guys, I am an auto parts technician and I have done some reading up on this stuff. For the trucks that are about 86 and up that use the EEC-IV engine control systems, they already have a multispark system. All that may help is a coil. When I did up my 89 3.0V6 Taurus I put on an Accel supercoil. The one that is a direct fit replacement, part number 140012 (that will apply to the trucks as well). It worked great. Alot more power. For example, the 1-2 shift before the coil was firm because of a shift kit, but after the coil was added it chirped the tires and tugged the steering wheel hard. BUT, I overgapped the plugs from the stock .045 to about .050. That itself would make a slight difference. Another thing to consider is the type of plugs. An aftermarket system with a coil may have a hotter spark. That means platinum plugs are not recommended. However I ran Bosch platinum in my Taurus and they showed no signs of damage. If you already have platinum plugs in and plan on installing a high-output coil than try it. But it may not hurt to try copper plugs anyway. It's hard to say. But from what I know that EEC-IV system is already a multispark system.
