Is there any significant difference between putting on a 4" or 5" straightpipe w/ 4" DP. I've read other posts on the topic, and it seems the exhaust tone being a little deeper w/ 5" is about the only difference. Is it a lot deeper or about the same? I recently cutout the muffler and have it straightpiped w/ stock size. It really helps the turbo spool up faster, and it sings great. Although, it sounds terrible when the EBPV closes to warm-up and the EGT's did not drop much. Has anyone tried both 4" and 5"? If so, which did you prefer? Thanks for any info.
i was just wondering how bad the stock pipe sounds when the ebpv kicks in, i like the sound of it, it sounds like a jet, but i was thinking of taking the stock muffler out. so i thought i would ask you since you have yours out, what does it sound like (why it sounds terrible) does it sound like a bigger jet now???

sounds like a huge jet without a muffler, when it would go to hi-idle like when fueling people would look and give the thumbs up and then sshhhhhh and they would frown. I unplugged mine and couldn't be any happier.
Well, maybe I should rephrase that. It dosen't sound terrible, but it doesn't have that deep, mean sound that I like. Some mornings I let it idle in the parking lot at work and when the EBPV kicks in everyone that walks by stands there and stares for a minute trying to figure out what is wrong. I then have to explain the whole EBPV function and straightpipe. It's really kinda funny. Is Ford the only trucks w/ EBPV? A few guys have Dodge/Cummins and they have never heard of EBPV.

I had a 3.5" straight pipe with the stock down pipe. I just switched to a 4" d/p and 5" straight pipe. I didn't notice any cooler egt's but it looks cool! I personally think it sounds way better. Deeper throaty sound with less turbo flutter. BTW I did need to put a small dent in the 5" pipe to clear the crossmember bolts.
i had 4" on my truck and bigger injectors forced me to go 5 to keep egt's down and flow the air. if your gonna stay mild on the mods 4" is fine, if your thinking about injectors and a bigger turbo go 5"

Try this, 4" turbo back, no muffler, exits in front of the rear tire. When my EBPV kicks on with high idle, you can't have a conversation within 20 feet of the outlet.
Like kilapapipa said. big pipes and the EBPV = lots of noise.
The dual fives where like that, twice, so I unplugged it.
bigger pipes will magnify any sound except the turbo flutter, maybe its just cuz I have duals, but mine flutter's a whole lot less then my buddies "stock" straight exhaust.
The only restriction in my exhaust is the down pipe, after that it was 2 1/2 dual into 5" side pipes, then I had it all changed to dual three" into the side pipes, the tone got ALOT deeper, and the whistle got insane. when you rug it, it's crazy loud, i love it, but quiet inside
The jump to the three didn't realy lower EGT's, but it did give me a boost in boost, only a couple of PSI and only noticeable at 100 MPH and FLOORED!!
it all depends on money, 4 or 5. do what you can afford, both will work fine.
I have read on here awhile ago that you don't need 5" unless your pushing 500 H.P., as a matter of fact, I think I've also read that you loose a little low end torque going from 4" to 5".
4" is all you need until you approach 450hp. A 5" system will run a little cooler, sound a little deeper, and look a whole lot better. I've gotten used to the size of my 5" system with 6" tip, but it sure draws attention at the truck stop. I can't get out of there in less than an hour, answering questions. Click here.
Where do you all get your straightpipes!?? LOL Nobody here in my neck of the woods can make one. Every shop I've called can't do 4 inch piping in their mandrel and can't make straight pipes. Is the superduty exhaust straight enough to just run a pipe to the rear axle and buy a pre-bent elbow?

Yep go to the big truck shop and look around. Well at least with a 6 speed, I haven't looked at a auto yet.
I have a neighbor down the road with 5" pipe and it sounds much better than any powerstroke I ever heard, ALOT deeper tone, flutter is almost not even noticable, If i had it to do over again it would be 5" from the down pipe back, Unbelievable difference in sound over the 4" for sure.
well after reading your posts, i think i might take my muffler off. my stock system is still in great shape, and i love the sound of the ebpv makes, so if you guys say taking the muffler out intensifies it more than i am all for it. i dont want to spend money on a bigger exhaust system until the stock one rusts out. hehe i cant wait. i have this neighbor that is a real ********* with his truck (or should i say staightpipes), so i hope this kinda gives him a taste of his own medicine!!! i guess potatoes in his pipes didnt work, maybe if i park in front of his house and wake him up at 10PM everynight he will get the hint. wish me luck!!
I was thinking I would order a piece of 5" tubing and a 4"-5" adapter to go on at the DP, then exit in front of the rear tire w/ an elbow. Think that will work, and/or clear the tranny crossmember?
