I was thinking I would order a piece of 5" tubing and a 4"-5" adapter to go on at the DP, then exit in front of the rear tire w/ an elbow. Think that will work, and/or clear the tranny crossmember?
That is exactly what I did. I had to put a small "tune dent" in the 5" to clear the crossmember bolts. Everything went great otherwise.
I bought a 45 degree elbow to exit in front of the rear tire and it just clears the framerail, as the frame starts to go up. This puts the tip a little closer to the tire than I would like. A 90 degree might work better for you.
Oh yeah if your psd is a black smoker-get ready to have a black wheel and tire!
I have a 5" system on my truck with a straight thru muffler and I love it. When the EBPV kicks in it is loud outside the truck however inside it really doesn't sound that different. What has really made me appreciate the 5" system is the truck's ability to cruise down the road at 80 or 90 mph at the engine still pulls. Before the 5" install the truck felt restricted. Of course the Edge Juice helps too...just wish I could keep my foot out of it .....diesel is darn expensive.
>Where do you all get your straightpipes!?? LOL Nobody here in my neck of the >woods can make one. Every shop I've called can't do 4 inch piping in their >mandrel and can't make straight pipes. Is the superduty exhaust straight >enough to just run a pipe to the rear axle and buy a pre-bent elbow?
Yep go to the big truck shop and look around. Well at least with a 6 speed, I haven't looked at a auto yet.
Does anyone else have any other input on building an exhaust yourself for an automatic??

This site has all sorts of different sizes of exhaust piping and exhaust misc. Even some stuff up to 6 inch diamemter.
You can get the "over the axle" pipe from Advanced Auto. Walker/Dynomax Super Duty replacement pipe, its 4" and runs about $40-$45. other then that its just straight 4" exhaust pipe bought at a big truck parts store. 5' of 4"dia. regular steel pipe runs around $30. The SD over the axle pipe will even work on the OBS trucks with a little tweaking of the hanger hook. I did this exhaust on my 96, & my 2000. The 2000 I added a MBRP 4" muffler.

Ggg6 do you have a part number for this over the axle pipe or a website that sells it so I can see what it looks like because I'm not sure that my Advanced Auto store will have it in stock..Also is it mandrel bent or just crush bent?
The OTA pipe is mandrel bent and it will be a special order. I had to order mine too, the tip exits at a angle (about 45°) just in front of the bumper on the OBS trucks. And it will also work with the spare in its place under the rear tank. I will look for a part #.
The only other odd item to get is a 3' of rod about 3/8" dia to make hangars out of. Cut, bend and weld them to suit. Also some 4" S/Steel band clamps instead of the 4" u-bolt clamps.

Thanks for looking for the part number for me. So this will still fit on the superduty right?

Yes it is sold as the replacement pipe for a SD. It just happens to fit the OBS as well with a little hangar tweaking. I am having a hard time finding the part #
Take care in dumping the exhaust in front of and close to the tire. I have read of someone doing that and reporting accelerated wear for that tire and discoloration of the wheel.
I plan to go 4", tipped and follow the stock pipes path.

I can't imagine that dumping the exhaust in front of the tire will wear it out faster. I can hold my hand on the tail pipe without burning it so it's not that hot. No different from driving on hot asphalt. Plus some f150's exhaust dumps right there from the factory. I bet the "accelerated wear" is from the power tire being on the right. But it will get black soot covering the tire. I think it looks cool, but I'm a little twisted. :-)
Someone else reported on here a while ago that when they dumped their exhaust in front of their rear wheel they said that they had much more rust on that side than the other when they took their wheels off, and had a hard time getting their rotor off of that side compared to before the exhaust change. Take it for what it's worth, but I will never exit my exhaust in front of my wheel.
