I'll be going to Vegas for the first time this Aug. can anyone reccomend any good hotels. I think I want to stay on the strip. Right now I'm looking at the Luxor or NYNY. thanks for any help or comments
One thing in vegas that even the nice hotels don't have is a coffee maker in the rooms grrr....so plan on gettin dressed and takin an elevator trip down to the main floor for coffee at 2.75 a cup, this was at the NY NY and most of the others too.....
i stayed at the luxor. my girlfriend at the time's ex-boyfriend paid for the room so i don't know what it cost but it was very nice. the best buffet was at the paris themed hotel. none of them speak french but they had a buffet from every region of france. the best was the scalloped potatos from Alsace/lorraine
most casinos have free drinks but when i was strolling around i prefered to just get my own 96oz margarita (sp?) from one of those hot dog vendor things. just be careful whenever you leave the a/c cuz the booze hits you lke a brick.
i found everyone very nice. most of the people just want a dollar but you have to be careful with the women because a lot of them are prostitutes. the only problems we had was some cab driver that was ****ed he'd picked up a short run when we had tickets for excalibur (the knights in shining armor thing from the cable guy)_. driver said something about waiting 45 minutes just for a 8$ fare.. really nice guy. i thanked him for keeping the A/C on for us, gave him 10$ and told him he could keep the change. girlfriend's dad thought that was so funny he paid for my dinner.
EDIT:
yeah find a cheap room and drive into town. i drove down from alberta. all the big hotels have a parking lot out back and there's also a monorail thing to get around.
coffee's expensive in the hotels. but i think they try and make money off the restaurant. charge you 20$ for a buffet even if you just want some coffee and toast
best breakfast i had was when we took the car and drove down the block to denny's. we finally found someone who looked like elvis and the steak and eggs for breaky really hit the spot
I have stayed at most of the top hotels in Las Vegas over the years, including some that aren't around anymore. My current fave is the Bellagio, first class service, rooms and prices to match. Las Vegas is many things to many people, but it is not a real good town to try and save money in. It is a good town to indulge in, for better or worse. And remember, what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas. Have a nice trip.
I stayed in the Sahara 2 years back. I wouldn't recommend it (story withheld). I stayed there becuase of the Nascar type themed areas inside and it was cheaper. I will recommend you go see the show "O" by Cirque Du Soleilhttp://www.bellagio.com/pages/ent_main.asp If you want to get tickets, be sure to get them several weeks in advance. Be sure to go up and see the old hotels at the end of the strip on Freemont Street (lose slots too ). http://lasvegas.com/attraction/FREMO...attraction.HTM I think the light show starts at 7:00 PM. Pretty cool!
You are coming this Aug.? Good luck, July and Aug. are our hottest months! Very rarely do we go below triple digits(even at night). Don't let that stop you though! It is still worth the trip. Like everyone else said, stay with a strip casino if you want to keep it nice. I would avoid any hotel from the dowtown area, alot of people think that it is on the strip, but it is actually downtown. Downtown is where the Freemont Street experience is. It is fun to visit downtown but it is not the strip. If you want lose slots, go to the local casinos away from the strip. Any of the Station Casinos are nice. By the time you come the Wynn will be open, it is going to be nice. Ya, I would not recommend getting drunk and walking out of a casino either, the heat will kill you. Also just make sure when you walk the strip to be careful, 99% of the drivers are from out of state and they are paying attention to the lights, not the road. We have the highest pedestrian rate in the country. There are many cool shows to see, I was born and raised here and the only strip shows I have ever been to is Blue Man and Lance Burton. They were both a blast and I have heard good things about the others. The forum shops in Ceasers are fun to walk and shop through. The Belagio has an awesome water show, and the best part is that it's free! I have been to almost every buffet in town and the best one I have ever been to is the one at Mandalay Bay. It is like $25, but it is worth every penny. So far the monorail has been touch and go, so I would not count on it as your primary mode of transportation around the strip. If you need to get somewhere on the west side of the strip, you can use Frank Sinatra Dr. Very few people know about it. It runs parallel to the strip on the west side behind the hotels. I would go see Hoover Dam if you have not before, very cool. If you have a car and want one of the best views of the city, take Owens as far East as it will go and you will drive part way up Frenchmans Mountain. It is a 30 min. drive or so from the strip but the view is woth it at night. What ever you decide to do, you will always remember your trip here! Good luck.
If you're looking for a small hotel, but right in the middle of the strip, take a look at the Barbary Coast. I've stayed there twice, and really enjoyed it. It's right on the same corner as the Mirage, Bellagio, and Ceasar's Palace, but somewhat less expensive. The service and the rooms are excellent, and I love gambling there, as it's not as crowded as the mega-hotels. When I was there (2003 was my last trip) it had some of the best odds for video poker you could find (but that may have changed).
Ask for a room with a view of the Bellagio fountains.
I end up getting a package deal through a travel agent and it came to $180 For a Hotel for 5 days and round trip airfare. My hotel was not on the strip so I rented a compact car and I liked it that way better because I can come and go as I please. The Hotel I stayed at was the Fitzgerald which is downtown and it was not too far from the strip. The only thing I did not like is that every one there drives like idiots.
