i recently replaced the distributor on my 1988 crown vic 5.0. i noticed that the new distributor gear was in a little diff position than the old one on the old distibutor. the stator metal "cage" and rotor seemed to be in the same positions as the old ones were in. and, everything else for the two distibutors were the same.
when i put the new one in it didnt line up perfectly with the mark i had made on the case of the distributor more than likely because of the gear i noticed was in a little diff position than the old distributor. so i put it in as close as possible.
my question is.......if im off one gear tooth, do i need to take the distibutor back out and move it? or, do i simply make up for that by turning the case of the distributor a little more.
What exactly do do you mean by the gear being in a different position? My first concern would be is the gear compatible with the drive gear on the camshaft, so you don't ruin the camshaft and really have a mess. If you are sure the gear is compatible, I would leave the distributor installed and turn the engine over until the rotor is pointing near the #1 terminal on the ditributor cap and then fine tune this by lining up the timing mark on the front of the engine to top dead center or a few degrees ahead per the timing specs, with the pointer. At this point you can tell where the distributor will set when the rotor is pointing to the #1 cap terminal and determine if it needs to be moved a gear. Don't turn the engine over with the distributor removed or you won't know what stroke you are on. Good luck.
