was wondering if anyone has ever bypassed the fuel tank selector valve??? my valve clicks when the dash switch is moved to rear tank but i get no fuel. i figure the valve is stuck. someone told me that i could bypass it and the fuel would be sucked from both tanks at the same time. doing this would mean that when my gauge reads 1/2 tank i roughly have one full tank +or- a little. thanks, Eddie II
Yep, I was thinking a later model EFI. You have no pumps in the tanks. I guess you could just remove it and put "T" 's in the lines. I would first check the rubber line between the rear tank and the metal line on the frame. I have seen them dry rot and allow air to be sucked in which will cause it to not properly suck fuel from the tank.
sounds like something worth checking out. i never thought about it since the front tank line goes back there before it goes to the motor and it works fine. i guess i just need to crawl back under there and inspect further. if a dry rotted line is the culprit then replacing it would be easier than teeing everything and i will have everything in working order. i'm fixing to take a long trip in this truck in the near future and i'm trying to get all the bugs worked out. thanks for the info. i'll post the problem as soon as i find it. if you just t it and not fix the probem you will have the same problem with both tanks as it will be sucking from both tanks not just the one with the good line. best bet is to pull the line off the solenoid and trouble shoot it from there it could still be the switching unit just because you hear it working does not mean it is. switch the lines around and see what happens
You could also try swapping the lines on the valve. Put the rear tank line on the front tank fitting and see if it will run that way. If so, then it is probably the valve.
I have a similar problem with my 95 F150 5L EFI 4x4 except my front tank is the problem. The front tank will work on flat land - when I start to climb or try to punch it - it just bogs down and I change to the rear tank to continue. Is it the fuel pump or something else?
Thanks,
Jim
Thanks LXMan1
Is that a simple change out? Also, I can fill both tanks and leave the switch on the rear tank - and it will suck gas from both tanks. I just never know when to fill up because the gauges aren't accurate. . the front tank gauge (float) stays at 3/4 . the rear tank gauge (float) starts at 3/4 and goes down from there. It works the best of the 2.
Thanks again,
Jim
Sounds like you may have 2 bad pump units. Each one has a pump and a set of check valves to keep one tank from pumping into the other. Sounds like they are both not working properly.
Try running the rear tank down to near empty. Then run off of the front tank for awhile. then switch to the rear tank and see if the level has gone up. Your problem may be that the front pump is pumping fuel into the rear tank and causing a pressure loss.
