Help. I rebuilt my Holley 4600 1850-3 600 vac sec and installed it back on my truck. When I started it there was gas gushing out the tube sticking up in the just behind the bowl on the front of the carb. It is amazing that the 390 was able to run at all.
Any suggestions? Do I need to adjust the float?
Thanks, Ray.
The tube is the vent for the fuel bowl. This is some sort of needle or float problem. Try adjusting the float to lower the fuel level in the bowl. Check that the needle is installed and not stuck. Check that the needle seats when the float is in the upper position. Check that the float 'floats' and is not leaking. And be very careful not to 'light up' the truck.
OK, got the float adjusted. No more spewing. Now the truck runs really rough and has slight surge. Will only run with choke part way and at around 2000 to 2500 rpm. When I push in the choke, the rpms drop off immeadiatly and the engine dies. Sorry that it is taking so long to respond to your help, I am by myself and need to lay down at times (cronic pain issues from military). I may be slow but I do questionable work.
How did you adjust the floats? The fuel level needs to be just below the sight hole with the screw removed. They may be too low now. Also make sure that there are no vacuum leaks.
I used the external adjustment and adj up until I got fuel just barely seeping with the engine running then I backed off a 1/4 turn and locked it in place. I will check for vacuum leaks using carb cleaner (I don't have starting fluid). I am going to replace all the vacuum lines (should of done it before this). If I can't get it going today, I am going to take it off and take it apart again to make sure that I did not miss something. I sure would hate to spend $3 or $4 on a new one but it may come to that on payday.
