What differential fluid to use?

From the information I've gathered from here I understand that I need a special fluid for the rear end.

What is it?

Is it a special kind or just a certain weight (viscosity) I need to be concered with.

How much fluid does the rear end take?

98 F150 XLT V6 shrt box ext cab.

Thanks.

It needs 75W140 Synthetic Lubricant. It will take about 3 1/2 quarts. You can get it at Wal Mart for about $9 per quart. If the rear axle has a limited slip unit, you will also have to add four ounces of limited slip additive. You will have to get that from the auto supply or dealer parts counter.

Good luck,

I'm pretty sure I have just a regular plain jane rearend.

However how do I know for sure it's not a limited slip?

Thanks for the info.

There will be a tag on the rear axle. You will see a number that will have the ratio. If the ratio number has a letter between the 3 and the decimal number then it is a limited slip. Example: 3L55 is a 3.55 ratio limited slip axle.

Also, if both rear wheels are off the ground and you turn one wheel, on a limited slip the other wheel will turn the same direction. If it is not a limited slip the other wheel will turn the opposite direction.

Good luck,
