I have a 66 ford f-100. My driver side rear axle is leaking fluid in the brake drum area from that plate that holds the brake assembly. First question is how do I figure out what rear end I have? (There are no bolts on the back side{rear of the truck} they are on the drive shaft side) Second question is how much trouble is it to change the bearings out? I am an engineman in the navy and I have tons of tools to use but I also need to know if there are any special tools involved in this process.
You only need to pull the one side that is leaking. You should be able to do it in 10 minutes if you have the tools handy.
Most of the time if the seal is leaking the bearings on its way out.
Best thing to do is bring it to a shop.
My self i cut the bearing and retainer off. I cut just enough then wedge in a cold chisel to crack the race it will slide off then. WEAR GOGGLES!! Then i stick the axle in the freezer (don't let the wife catch you!) Next heat the new bearing to ~250 deg and slide it on the axle quickly you should be prepared to push it on the axle, so find a pipe that will fit over the axle and push on the inner race of the bearing only. DO NOT push or hit the outer race it will damage the bearing. Make sure the bearing seats all the way down the axle then do the retainer the same way.
Some guy press off the bearings but you can bend the axle that way and you cant get to the inner race so quite often the outer race EXPLODES and that hurts.
I don't like to cold press on the new bearings i like the shrink and heat but some times you still need the press or pipe.
