All 250's have 8 lugs and as far as your truck starting in gear either someone really messed with the wiring or your neutral safety switch is messed up. The switch is in the lower end of the steering column twards the floor on the topside. It is engauged by a flipper that is connected to shifter running through the column then once outside the firewall connects to the tranny linkage rod. Also make sure you have all the selections on your shifter such as Park reverse neutral drive 2nd and 1st maybe the linkage outside is one off or somethin. Good luck their fun to work on its just trial and error.
Frank The F250 & 350 series truck are heavy duty use trucks and have larger everything under the chassis, axles, brakes, etc. including 8 lug wheels. The F100/150 trucks have 5 lug wheels and lesser sized axles & brakes.
The truck starts in drive because the Netural safety switch is compremised, either bypassed or defeted. I choose not to run one on my truck so as long as you are aware that it will start in gear you can live with it. The switch is located on top of the column about 8" up from the firewall. It looks like a gear selector, and works off the column shifter. It also operates backup lights on the trucks that have them.
Thanks for the info. 460 Crew & jowilker, I removed the switch, tested (with ohm meter) and it tested good. I was able to adjust the switch with bracket and get my reverse lights to work but still starts in gear. I guess I need to trace where it connects, thanks again.
