Arrow Transfer case leak - Glue?

I know, evil idea... plug the little gasket gap with some kind of glue?

I have an NP-208 on the back of a C-6 auto on my 351 84 bronco...
and she leaks good old red ATF from the main transfer case join gasket crack/hole . (gasket just before the case drain lug)

what can I use to patch it up? I dont want to replace the whole gasket. and I sure as heck dont want to rebuild the case.

I have tried superglue. held for a day, then seemed to make matters worse by taking some more gasket material out with it when it failed.

I am thinking gight temp silicon type glue? but how do I make it stick to the aluminium transfer case? :/

any thoughts?

ps. i cant access the truck atm, as it is in the shop getting an eaton m112 supercharger fitted. pics will be posted when i get her back .

i think you ought to pull it out and fix it right (put in a new gasket) if you dont want to do it maybe you could have the guys who are putting the blower on handle it

First of all - you're getting a supercharger put on, but you want to glue your transfer case together?

OK assume that you don't want to pull the case. Superglue dries hard and that wouldn't work. It would pop right off when everything starts moving. People who fix things like this in this manner usually use JB Weld. I do not own any JB Weld, which tells you my philosophy about fixing things.

JB Weld does work though. People have mended cracked blocks and other things with it. I am not positive that it would be the right substance for covering a leaky gasket though. You may have better success there using RTV silicone. But if the JB Weld could get in there, it would be the most "permanent repair" that you could make besides taking it apart and repairing it properly.

fair enough. if i could drive down and pick up a NP208 gasket, I would.
but I cant. I have to import it from the USA. I am usually of the mind that if its broke, fix it better than it was built the first time.
So i will order in the gasket from the USA along with my bronco soft-top ( http://broncograveyard.com/products/cat/20/211/35614 ) but one problem... I cant find the gasket anywhere and seal kits for the NP208 dont seem to include it?
is the gasket just some type of sealant? or is it the cork/rubber type pre-fabricated gasket.

I suggest fixing it with the gasket but if need be you can try the "permatex right stuff" it is used as gasket material and works pretty good even around atf just clean the surface first with a cleaner.

I checked with a couple different places when I rebuild my borg-warner and even Ford is not using a gasket on them any more. Just the permatex auto black form-a-gasket material. It's what was holding it together when I pulled the t-case apart. Any oil on the mating surfaces causes a leak though so make sure to clean it really well. Oh yeah, a poor job of cleaning the mating surfaces/applying the sealant is what caused the t-case to go cause it ran out of oil and starting making funky noises on the old owners - got a heck of a deal on it though...

Even if it takes no gasket, trying to repair the leak from the outside never works properly. Whatever you use to repair it is not really mating to anything and it will eventually get pushed out. No matter how much you clean the leaky area, it's still not going to be clean enough and stay clean enough for anything to form and stick to it well enough to hold up to the pressure of the oil, or whatever, trying to get out.

The only thing that I know of that has a fighting chance in this situation is the JB Weld, that stuff is pretty tough. You can drill through it once it hardens.

Whether or not it requires a gasket is not an issue. It just the simple mechanics of trying to repair a joint from the outside by piling some sort of substance on it. It rarely works, and if it does work, it rarely holds for long and will probably blow off when you least need it to - like out on the trail somewhere. Not that you ever _need_ a breakdown.

thanks guys. I appreciate the research and ideas you put forward.
*sigh*
I guess that means I gotta pull the xfer case off and crack her open.
I'll search the forums for a walkthrough / set of pointers for doing that.
and I will try and keep the $70 worth of new ATF that will pour out when I do this.

thanks again
