Who's your internet service? *** Cable has a spam-filtering service that you can set to either ignore, mark, or delete junk mail. I have it set to mark it, then my e-mail program (Pegasus) filters it out. That lets me check it myself if I want to, otherwise it gets cleaned out automatically. SW Bell probably has something similar. Some of the dial-ups offer it, some don't. There's spam software you can buy that runs on your computer, but I don't use it so don't know which one works best.

You can also use Mozilla Thunderbird. It has a junk mail filter that learns. I rarely see junk mail any more.

Try not signing up for any special offers, posting your email anywhere online, and not registering for anything with your personal address. I have an address at yahoo that I use if I want to get newsletters or some site asks that I give it for whatever reason. They filter junk mail (not very well, but they do) and I don't get much of anything in my school account or work account, which is where I prefer to do email. And you don't want to post your email addy anywhere because people send out spiders across the web to seek out things like that, they harvest them, and add them to their spamming lists. You might also try that link that says "click here to unsubscribe"... that sometimes works. I know it helped me... I only get 2-4/week as opposed to 6-7/day now in my yahoo account.

Outlook is on your computer, so it's got its perks like instant notification and a personal address book and calendar(you can have an address book on Yahoo too, I just find Outlook is better as a personal data manager) and it's pretty decent... what you have to look out for (with Outlook) is getting a virus that harvests email addresses off your machine. With web-based email, you have to log in, which can get annoying. Yahoo is fine for a second email... it's my junk email account. Outlook is fairly simple to use, I think, but Yahoo is also quite straight forward. If you already have Outlook and have given your address out to friends/family, don't bother switching... just start a Yahoo account (a free one) for any internet newsletters, sweepstakes, or whatever else you'd give that info out for.
Something I have on my computer is McAfee Security Center. It has a spam guard, as well as virus scan, personal firewall (you pretty much NEED a firewall these days) and privacy service (supposed to prevent access to your personal information). I'd recommend it if you've got an extra $70 or so lying around.
To recap: which is better depends on your needs. If you're established and comfortable, no need to switch... get an auxiliary one to catch the junk!

Look up SpamFighter on the net, it is a free download, I use it on my outlook and it seems to catch the few spammers I get; I get one spam every three months,... maybe.

Like D-ranger said, Outlook is a program on your computer it allows you to download/upload your email from a POP3/SMTP server without having to go to that a website to read your mail. You can sign up for Yahoo premium service which will allow this(not able to do this with a free account). You also get a 2gig mailbox, anti virus and spam filtering along with personal filters also. The Yahoo filters work even if you download to Outlook. Just the standard spam filtering works pretty good I get one or two that slip by every now and then. The nice part about Yahoo, Gmail, etc. is as long as your computer has not downloaded via Outlook, you can get to your email anywhere. I do know you can import/export your email addresses to and from Yahoo/Outlook via CSA(comma seperated value)

staying warm?

I have Outlook 5, but you should be able to set all your "Junkmail" settings to "high" to keep most of these out. My provider has McAfee "Postini" that sorts through and captures these to quarantine along with any possible emails with viruses. They send me a notice to remind me to go clean out this cache.
